Answer:
Yes. The timing electronics are controlled by the battery you install that comes with the unit. You can install the battery and do your settings before you place it in the wall and make your wiring connections. Since the unit runs off the battery, there is no disruption in the event of a power outage as far as settings.

Answer:
The battery powers the display and timer. So a power interruption should not affect it. Because there is no back light the battery should last several years.

All program settings are kept in ROM. read only memory, and will not be lost if the power is out or battery is dead. So, the switch will continue to keep time and turn the relay on and off even with your electricity out. Of course fhen your lights will still not work. To maintain the time and date settings the battery must be replaced when the low battery indicator is on and you have about a minute to replace the battery after you remove it to avoid having to restore the correct time and date. Again, you will not lose the programed settings. the switch basically runs everything from the battery and ROM memory you have programed in and just switches the line current on and off. That is why you can program the switch in your hand, before connecting it to your wiring. Read Less

Yes, this timer is designed for only 2 wires. The extra wire just needs to be capped off on the timer unit. There is a YouTube video on how to wire the timer.

Yes, the ST01 timer works in this situation. You would connect the Black wire from the timer to one of your existing wires, and the Blue wire from the timer to the remaining existing wire. The Red wire from the timer is unused and should be covered with a wire nut (provided). The Green wire from the timer connects to bare copper (ground) wires, if present, otherwise can also be covered with a wire Read More

For the timer swt., the cutout is a "rocker switch" size, 1-5/16" x 2-5/8". I installed my swt in a 2-gang box, the other swt an 'old-style' toggle switch. I found the right switch plate right off the shelf at Home Depot.

The normal square opening switch plate that already came with the house worked perfectly. I was surprised that a timer with all these features took up the same size opening for the switch plate as a normal rocker type on off switch.

Yes, pressing the front plate will turn on/off. But timer will still be in AUTO mode. E.g., if you turn it on manually, it will be turned off automatically at the next scheduled off time.

Yes, you can press the cover for manual on/off usage. The cover is over and hides the programming buttons. You can pry it open with a fingernail to get to the programming buttons. Otherwise it acts as a push on/off light switch.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 52 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best in Class The robust backup battery and the seasonal dusk-to-dawn timer sell this product the best. It is fairly easy to program. It has a daily option to just have it come on at dusk and off at dawn. It automatically adjusts the on-off time to match the daylight savings time and the change of the seasons. Don't get stuck with another brand with a skimpy internal battery backup which dies in as little as 3 hours. The backup battery in this model is replaceable from the front and is a robust battery. It is also very easy to wire into place and makes no running noise at all (very quiet). August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Flexible Programming on/off events Great flexible product in terms of being able to program just about any on/off timing you want. Dusk/Dawn to daily events based on daily "actual "sunrise and sunset times. Program it once and you're done, no need to adjust based on times of the year. One key point, this unit is based on on/off event programing which gives it's flexibility vs getting locked into defined event schedule. I did have to call customer support to help program since the instructions are not very good, however, they were great and very helpful. August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works as Advertised This is a must have if something needs to be turned on and off. It was relatively easy to install. The programming instructions are vague so it is best to watch the UTube video on programming the timer. Once the programming is complete and you've set it to the auto astro, you never have to worry. It does click when turning on and off which is perfectly normal for the timer to do. August 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works beautifully Turns the out outside lights on and off in a three way circuit. No other switch I could find could do that. August 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Dusk to dawn This is a great switch for dusk to dawn, especially where a photo cell may not work as well. It is easy to install and suggest watching the online video for programming. Once you are done setting you basically have no more interaction with it. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works Well, Has Battery Backup Easy to install and fairly easy to program. Has a nice battery backup to hold programming during a power outage; the battery comes with the purchase and is easily replaceable. It is quiet and has a nice option when programming to select "ALL" days, so you don't have to program each day separately. The front door can be depressed to automatically turn on/off the light. Just set your time zone and latitude zone (South, for example) and the timer automatically turns on at dusk and off at dawn all throughout the year with no additional programming needed. Other digital timers do not have a backup battery that lasts more than a few hours. This one's back up battery is replaceable and only draws battery power during a power outage and runs for a couple of days on the backup battery.. It is a very good choice for a digital timer. Remember to purchase your new double-wide face plate to accommodate your timer. I used smaller twist on wire tightener nuts than was supplied in order to save room in the wiring box. June 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly what I needed. Worked very well for my not having a load wire in box. Programming was a little difficult as instructions have vvery small writing and following line by line was difficult going back from unit to instructions. Writing on unit buttons also very small. Once installed, timer works marvelously. Knows day of year and accounts for daylight saving time changes and knows time of dusk to turn on. Also, with battery operated clock, i power goes out, no need to reprogram. Very pleased with purchase. May 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wall timer light switch Good product. Works well and easy to install. Once it is programed, there is no further worries. Make sure of your wiring configuration. June 24, 2016
