Customer Questions & Answers

I want to use this as a dedicated timer for outlets for outdoor decor like x-mas lights. Is this possible?

I want to use this as a dedicated timer for 4 or 5, 15 or 20 amp outdoor outlets for outdoor decor like x-mas lights. All outlets in turn would be on a dedicated breaker. Is this possible? Is this safe? Is there a cheaper or better way to get all my lights to come on and turn off at the exact same time on a residential level?
Asked by: Matt
This is an INDOOR timer. If you want the time clock outside to control lights, you will need the outdoor model. Figure your total load watts/volts=amps, ex. 4800 watts divided by 120 volts = 40 amps, which is the maximum rating for this timer. This will require a 40A single pole circuit breaker into your main electrical panel (or into a sub panel) with 3 #8 wires (one black and one white [neutral] to power the clock, and one black (or blue or red BUT NOT WHITE OR GREEN to supply power to the load (your outdoor outlets). Then use a copper lug connector to connect your 4-5 outlets #12 wire to the #8 load wire. Tape well with cloth electrical tape covered with plastic electrical tape. FOR OUTDOOR SAFETY, use GFCI ground fault receptacles in an outdoor box w/cover. OR you can wire directly w/o use of plugs (receptacles). GOOD LUCK

The timer part of my intermatic t-100 timer stopped working..I can manually turn it on/off with the lever...is this repairable or do I need to replace

I checked the timer dogs and they were on tight...
Asked by: Wayne
How old is the timer? Manufacturer's 1 year warrantee. You can buy just the clock itself and re-wire as before.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and durable My backyard has a 30-40 year old timer already(same model, same design) and its still working strong. It ticks a little louder than the new one I just installed, but only if you head is next to it. The new one is very quiet. The design is simple, and everything is sturdy. The main component comes off very easily with a snap at the top. Remove, install box on the wall, then snap it back in. Basically I connected the line from the breaker to the Neutral and Line screws, then connected the Load(my two front lights) to the Load and Neutral screws. Ground to ground. took 15 mins. Setting the timer and the on and off switches took seconds. Highly recommend for this application! And I know very little about electricity. Of course turn off the power before working with it ;) Thanks, HD!
