Can You drive over them?

This question is from StealthFlow Low Profile Downspout Extension

January 26, 2015
I need something to carry the water from a downspout on the up hill side of my driveway to the lawn. It's a distance of about 15 feet. This would traverse the driveway and we would have to drive over it or be able to move it easily, once or twice a day. I'd only need it in the Winter when the runoff from the downspout pours across the driveway and freezes at night.

Do you recommend this product as a solution to my problem?

Answer:
No. While the product is sturdy plastic, I can not see it holding up to that weight. If it is tunneled under your driveway its probably okay; but not just driving over it. The manufacturer may say otherwise; but I doubt it.

What if you brace either side of the downspout with 2x4s, then you can drive over the 2x4 and not damage the downspout.

Would not drive over this product with the weight of a vehicle, however, it would only take you seconds to move the product out of your way and a few seconds to reattach.

I think if you watch the little video that's online here at HD website is show 's it can withstand being run over by a SUV. The video is right where this product is. I think you can get a better idea to your question there. Hope this helps.

Due to the material that the downspout extension is made of, no you cannot drive over it.
You'd need to either remove it when the car is being used, or do a more practical but more labor intensive option of burying it under the driveway.

Answer:
I'd leave the elbow on if it's already there and in decent shape. However one could install this extension on a straight piece of downspout and bend it as shown in the picture.

Answer:
I installed it both ways around my home. Some spots with the elbow and another without. With the elbow left on, it snaps into place very securely using the ridges on the elbow, requiring no screws to be held in place. On a straight pipe it's probably wise to add a screw.

I have 2 that I use with the elbow. I looked up the product on the webpage since I do not have the packaging and I think you almost have to use the elbow. Downspouts are square (almost) and the extension connector end to take the water away from the house is a flattened oblong.

Answer:
I didn't have to make this much of a bend, but I'm fairly sure that I could have given the number of corrugations molded into the assembly. However, I'd suggest considering installing another 90 degree aluminum bend at the bottom of your existing downspout and then installing this extension if this is feasible, as I believe it would be more durable in the long run.

StealthFlow Low Profile Downspout Extension is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 136.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Downspout It is a two piece downspout extension. Where the two pieces join, it is not a tight fit so water is constantly leaking out of that coupling spot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well made and fits numerous configurations I needed to extend a downspout at the front of the house where the existing concrete trough is too short and allowing water to erode the soil under the adjacent walkway. I bought this unit, and after determining the actual "multi-dimensional" configuration I needed, was initially fearful that there would be no way anything would ever work. However, in less than 5 minutes I was able to assemble this downspout extension and configure it to fit perfectly. Installation is really easy, as recessions are molded in to allow easy attachment (if desired/required) to the downspout. Also, there's an insert in place (which I and most folks will simply remove) that will allow it to be installed and secured on smaller types of downspouts (e.g. those on some modular buildings and mobile homes).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Leaky but serves the purpose I used this to run about 15' down a decent slope. No matter how I wiggled or pushed, there was significant leakage at every joint. It may or may not be an issue for your application. It was not a deal breaker for me. I needed the majority of the water to be redirected and it served that purpose. I did use some caulking to help curb the leaking. The connection to smaller sized downspots is awkward looking but again, serves the purpose.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great downspout extension Thie Downspout extension is a very well built product and solves the problem of gushing water out of the downspout and gouging the landscaping. They install quickly and will rotate in any direction once fitted on the downspout. I wish they would have included a couple of screws to anchor the extension to the downspout. I also bought the downspout extensions which fit perfectly to the original Stealth-flow downspout and just clicks into place. The only thing I would add, is that there are no holes in the bottom of the extension or the original downspout extender. This, I think would add to mosquitoes breading in the ridges after a rain. I solved this problem by using a Dremal cutting tool to sliced slots in each of the ridges along the bottom so water would seep into the ground below. I also drilled a hole in each center support ridge so water would not collect there either. Both the downspout and the extensions are ruggedly built to withstand someone standing on them and should hold up well over time. Now I just need more wood chips to cover the extensions.

They didn't join easily. The majority of water will pass through, but water is going to leak anywhere the parts join together because they are not tight.

This is such a superior product it is a wonder that no one produced it before this. The low profile is a big improvement over the round accordion usual one. Than you can walk on it without fear is great, too. It's rained several times since mine was installed and works wonderfully. More than meets my expectations - if fact it was more of a gamble on my part - wasn't sure how I would like it once it was in place, but I am very pleased. My only suggestion is offer other colors, but I would buy it again [if fact plan to get more later] even if it were hot pink with green polka dots!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product This downspout extension was very easy to install, and is adjustable for different size downspouts. The parts clipped together with minimal effort. Because of the low profile of the extension, I was easily able to camouflage it in the existing landscaping by simply covering it with the existing mulch. I accidentally stepped on one of the extensions, and was afraid I had damaged it, but it supported my weight without crushing.
