How good is this window when it comes to keeping out outside noise?

How good is this window when it comes to keeping out outside noise?
Asked by: Mark
Thank you for a good question. Our windows and patio doors have performance ratings for Sound Transmission Class and Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class. Sound Transmission Class (STC) is defined as: The loss rating of a material over a selected range of sound frequencies. The higher the number the better. For this window, the rating is 25 and we have available options that allow the window to perform as high as 32. Outdoor-indoor Transmission Class (OITC) is defined as: A single-number rating calculated in accordance with ASTM E 1332, using values of outdoor-indoor transmission loss. It provides an estimate of the sound insulation performance of a facade or building elements. The frequency range used is typical of outdoor traffic noises. For this window, the rating is 21 and we have available options that allow the window to perform as high as 27. In general this window features insulated glass so the window has a great ability to reduce noise that passes from outside to inside. For especially noisy applications (proximity to highway, busy intersections, airports, and etc), we may encourage you to seek higher than standard STC/OITC ratings. To obtain products with higher ratings, please visit a Home Depot store near you so a window and door associate may quote or order what works best for you using the in-store special order catalog.

can this window or any of these be mounted on it's side?

Asked by: chuckdw
Thank you for allowing us to assist you today. This single hung window is intended to only be installed with the 35 ½” dimension horizontal and the 47 ½” dimension vertical. Our vinyl windows include a weep-hole system that is designed to direct water that may enter the window back toward the exterior where it belongs. If this window is installed on its side or vertically as you suggest, the water will not drain out properly. Additionally, the sash (opening part of the window) would not function.
