Why can't a metal drill press be used for wood work? Speed range seems adequate and I want the versatility of both. Thanks for your help.

Also, one more thought... Following on the thought of "gloppy mess of cutting oil and wood shavings", I am fairly sure that it would be considered a health safety hazard as hot metal shavings landing into a mix of cutting oil and wood sounds like a fire risk.

As such, OSHA probably has rules against using the same cutting tools/area (lathe/drill press/etc) for wood and metal in the work environment for operator safety and UL probably has a combination of different/incompatible safety requirements along those same lines probably making it impossible to list one device as compatible for both.

That's not to say that people don't, with "good hygiene", on a non-commercial basis effectively (with some level of safety) use the same press for both wood and metal. Read Less

Ultimately, switching a drill press back and forth between metal and wood is not easy and often you can get metal shavings embedded in your wood projects, cutting oil stains on wood, and gloppy messes of cutting oil and wood shavings...
I have heard of people using two tables, one for wood, one for metal (the metal table also has a groove around the outside to catch the cutting oil, where the wood table is totally flat and much larger). But nobody is going to say "we stand behind..." (for liability reasons). Read Less
