What's the reason for this? Is it due to an interactivity between the cement and gypsum?

Answer:
You can use the 1/4" backer on the wall. You will need to use horizontal blocking on the seams if it is going directly to the studs

Answer:
Hello Jerry,
Hardie Backer does not recommend using 1/4" backer board for walls. Hardie Backer 500 is the recommended backer board for walls.

Cannot say. It depends on if the subfloor meets the minimum deflection criteria per the tile manufacturers requirements.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good for tiling larger area Excellent backerboard for larger areas. It is slightly cheaper than the 3x5's, but downside is they don't come with the grid lines like the 3x5 do. May 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great for doing large areas Goes down much quicker than 3 x 5 sheets, will have less seams and overall costs less. A little more difficult to handle but when doing large areas this is the way to go. Only drawback is it does not have the preset marks for where to install screws but a chalk line and a little bit of time one can prep all for 6" on the edge and 12" in the field. October 12, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Amazingly tough! The 4' x 8' sheets are amazingly tough- I expected to break a few of these sheets by accident, but so far not one has busted! Even when picking up by one corner, this stuff stays together. Bonds extremely well with grout and makes a solid subfloor base. March 5, 2013
