Can this be used as a shower floor tile?

We would like to use this mosaic tile as a floor tile in a shower, but are concerned about the stainless mosaic pieces not holding up well regarding traffic/cleaning/scrubbing and possibly discoloring. It's mainly advertised as a wall tile, but so are most of the mosaic tiles used as flooring in showers. Appreciate your recommendation/clarification before we install. Thanks!

The main risk would be the stainless steel tiles. They're actually just stainless steel caps glued on top of ceramic bases. The glue is weak and not particularly water-resistant. (You'll notice this if you cut them with a wet saw.)
Additionally, the stainless steel tiles do present a risk of scratching and discoloration. And rust! Stainless steel comes in many varieties, and some varieties will rust. With products from China, it's hard to know the quality of the steel.
If you want to pursue this project, go buy a square of tile and lay it on your shower floor. Subject it to daily water and scrubbing. You'll get a hint at how well it would survive in a permanent installation.
If you're willing to take the risk and you're gentle with cleaning your tile, I'd say that you have a 50/50 shot at success and happiness with your floor. Read Less

Should this stone tile be sealed before grouting?

Please confirm that the luster of the tile will be maintained through sealing before grouting. It appears that stone tile would be more absorbent than regular ceramic tile.

Also, is there a particular type of grout that should be used for stone tile?

I plan to use these tiles for a portion of my shower wall. I really like the look of these tiles and don't want to change my design. I have already ordered them, however I read in one of the reviews that these might rust, any advice will be appreciated.

Answer:
Hello AJ,
Thinset is the recommended mounting method. The tile has an out of the box recommended grout spacing of 1/8". I suggest using non-sanded grout in this case. I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Chris

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Lovely! One day before my tile guy was supposed to install our backsplash, I changed my mind and went on a search to find a backsplash that was better suited for my countertops. This product completely fit the bill! The stainless steel accents really shine with my under counter lighting and adds some interest to the overall look without being too busy. It isn't the cheapest out there, but it complimented my granite in such a nice way that I went for it and haven't looked back since. March 1, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks great Looks great. Always gets compliments from people who see it. I installed this on a bathroom vanity. It's been in service for a year and still looks absolutely perfect. I treated it with sealer after installation, and haven't seen a bit of deterioration/rust/etc. I use stainless steel-covered tiles in my rentals. None have shown any signs of rust, so I tend to think that the manufacturer's warning labels are a bit overblown. (Ask any landlord. If a product can survive in a rental, it can survive anywhere. Except maybe a prison.) October 14, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by gorgeous tile used this in the powder room and I just love how it turned out! Used non sanded grout in bright white. wipe down the steel capped tiles with cloth when you're done to make them shiny again. couldn't be happier with my purchase. worth the extra cost. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Really looks good! I am very pleased with it. This backsplash really, really looks good with the granite countertops that Home Depot installed. It is a very good looking installation. November 28, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by real stainless caps This is a sleek looking mix of stone tiles and tiles with steel caps. The price is per sheet, not per case. We had to return it as the box warns you can't put the tile in a moist place as the steel will rust. We had planned it as a sink backsplash. Beautiful and expensive looking. September 24, 2013
