Customer Questions & Answers

Is it necessary to seal the stone pieces if being used as a kitchen backsplash?

Hi - I am hoping to use this as a backsplash in my kitchen. It would only be in low moisture areas (i.e. not above the kitchen sink). Is it necessary to seal the stone pieces? It seems rather tedious to go through and only seal the stone pieces using a paint brush.... So I am wondering if it is necessary to do so, and if so, can I just seal the whole thing? Thanks for your feedback!
Asked by: Beth
Yes, it is necessary to seal the stone pieces. It will also prevent damage over time.

Can this tile be used for a kitchen backsplash? Do I have to seal before I grout?

Asked by: JR
this item is great for a backsplash. I would seal the stone pieces before grouting. small paint brush, wipe off any excess sealer that may get on the other pieces with a rag or paper towel.

Is there natural stone in this mosaic? If so, doesn't natural stone require sealing?

If this mosaic has natural stone, isn't it supposed to be sealed before grouting and on an ongoing basis? Or does it depend on how porous the stone is? Thanks for the help!
Asked by: Colormaven
I will answer both of your questions in this one space........This mosaic does have a stone piece included. All of our descriptions, ratings, etc... have been updated, although they haven't been updated on HD's website as of yet. The stone in this product absorbs less than 3% by weight and can be put into a shower. You are correct the stone should be sealed before grouting, and every year or so as a maintenance plan. Strange as it sounds showers are not waterproof. Water pass thru the grout or any other potential opening. Sealing will impede, but not eliminate this possibility. That is why the stones and grout in this shower must be sealed every 9-12 months. With this particular piece the water will/can pass thru the grout, or the stone pieces. The shell pieces will not allow water to pass, but underneath the shell pieces is a ceramic spacer which could allow water thru. Yes, backer boards will absorb water IF it does penetrate thru the tile, or grout. This is why during the installation, waterproofing membranes, hot mopping, and other techniques are employed to keep the water that can leak thru from getting into your inner walls, studs, etc......In the last year we have sold over 15,000 pc of this item to HD and I would bet quite a bit of this was installed into showers. I would not hesitate to put this into a shower. I wouldn't put it on the shower pan, because of the slip potential, but walls or accent strips will be great if the correct precautions are taken.

Overall the tile is very good quality, and looks great, however when cutting the tile for an edge 2 or 3 of the darker tiles (facia) lost the adhesion from the base tile , not a big deal they just needed to be glued back on to the backer tile. This was out of 4 boxes of tiles. Overall the tiles look very good.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Inexpensive Option The pricing on this mosaic is a value. The white/neutral tones, mixed with the mother of pearl is a good design. The rating would be higher, but there are two issues with this tile: 1. There are some flaws in the light colored tiles - brown streaks that make me want to pop and replace some, and 2. The mother of pearl is just a veneer glued onto a base, so some of them pop off. I'm hoping the grout holds them. This tile is thousands less than the mother of pearl mosaic I found elsewhere.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pick! This tile really can match up with a lot of counter top colors. I put it with a gray quartz countertop and I am very happy with it. Have had quite a few friends who love it. Can't go wrong with it. Also I looked for 3 months at tile before picking this one.
