I want to start some small Heirloom type tomatoes and grow them in large pots on the patio in MELBOURNE, FLORIDA. what is the best soil>>>>what size large pot is best....should I start them in small peat pots to start them?
Asked by: Kayo
I started mine with this kit that comes with everything you need and these are peat pellets. My seeds germinated well. After I had seedlings around 5", I took them out of this greenhouse kit and used an organic potting mix for vegetables.

I'm pleased that I'm getting results already. I started different kinds of seeds almost a week ago. My plant identification is crude. Had I planned farther in advance, I would have used inexpensive vinyl mini blinds and cut them up into small pieces. Then, I would have used a Sharpie type of pen to label each seed pod I started. That would ultimately be easier since it would transfer with the seedlings. I will do this the next time around. The trick is to use enough water to keep the sterile seed starting mix moist. It will strain the germinating seeds to not get enough water, yet it is easy for mold to start growing on seedlings if you over water the starter pods. This kit allows for watering from the bottom which helps. My comfort level is to use a spray bottle to keep the surface moist when the rest of the starter pod is moist. That way, I'm not over-watering and creating an environment that is so wet or moist where mold grows. Also, it helps to create a greenhouse type of environment using warm water as their instructions suggest. I taped the lid on 2 sides to make it easier to move. I used package tape. It has been easy to unpeel and to re-stick since I moved this a couple of times. I'm ordering Jiffy re-fill pellets to start more plants since I will transfer my seedlings soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! For how cheap this is it is amazing. After I used all the pellets I fill the bottom with potting soil and I've continued to use it. Definitely worth the $5! Now I'm going to buy one for a friend.

I did not use the greenhouse effect, I left them uncovered in direct sunlight. So far, 30 of the peat pellets have sprouted. Great way to start my vertical garden planter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love them! Easy and affordable way to start your seeds early indoors. It was fun watching them go. Then outside they went easy as that. No shock to the plant when planting. They take right away with no wilt and recovery time. Awesome!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The 25 pellet greenhouse had the right size Jiffy pellets. The 25 pellet greenhouse had the right size Jiffy pellets. This size gives 11 more pellets at a higher price than the 25 pellet greenhouse. But they are TOO SMALL to use with vegetables. They dry out too easily. I would only use these for small flowers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic greenhouse, very inexpensive I bought this a couple of weeks ago to see how it would germinate milkweed seeds. They typically take 10 days to 2+ weeks to germinate in the ground. Using this product, they germinated in 4-5 days! I am VERY happy. I have since bought the peat pellet replacements and have germinated more milkweed, peppers and peas. My success rate is easily 98% per seed. I have been keeping the greenhouse in the back of my SUV where I know it is warm/hot and not in direct sunshine. I can't imagine why this product would fail on you. If you can not germinate seeds from this, you are obviously doing something VERY wrong. The attached picture was my first use. You can see all the milkweed coming up, the peppers I had in the last row took a couple more days. Also, if I take care of it, I can see this lasting for years. I have nothing negative to say about this product, I love it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK, but the so called greenhouse is very flimsy and won't last too long unless it is used only indoors. see title. Peat pods are the same ones they made forever and work as described.
