Customer Questions & Answers

Can I start sunflower seeds in this medium successfully?

I read that sunflower seeds are finicky and will not transfer well. Can I start mammoth and dwarf sunflower seeds in this medium and transplant them outside? I need to protect seeds from birds and squirrels and this is the best option I can think of.
Asked by: Kira
Yes, I've done this with the Jiffy windowsill greenhouse. Just keep an eye on them so that you can remove the lid and give them a little sun before they grow spindly.

What size are the pellet wells?

What size refills (in mm) should be used for these trays? Thanks!
Asked by: BEA90
I refill with the same Jiffy brand of pellets. Jiffy pellets are the best quality/value.

This kit works like a charm and I've been able to refill with Jiffy pellets and reuse the greenhouse. I do have to use a very thin rubberband in order to keep the lid on. A heavier rubberband would crush the lid/wreck the greenhouse effect.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK for the price. These little things are pretty nifty, but they have a tendency to cause mold if you follow the instructions. On my first one, I followed the directions exactly and left the lid on for about 5 days straight. After that I noticed that most of the of pellets had grown some mold. I left the lid off for a day and let some of the water dry out and the mold growth seemed to slow quite a bit. A lot of it went away and most of the seeds seemed to grow up properly. 3 of them grew up with mold and eventually died. I bought another one about a week later and this time, I put in less than the recommended amount of water. Just enough to get the pellets (or discs or whatever you call them) to expand all the way and be moist on the top. I then planted the seeds and left the lid off and put it under a grow light, giving them about 76F degrees of heat for 16 hours. I then put the lid back on for 12 hours and left it off for 4, watering when the tops appear to be dry. I have been doing this since I bought it (about 7 days ago) and no mold has grown in the second one. Also, if you have seeds that will germinate at different times and / or grow at different rates, these can be difficult. While the sprouts will require more air (lid off), the germinating seeds will still need more moisture (lid on).
