I read that sunflower seeds are finicky and will not transfer well. Can I start mammoth and dwarf sunflower seeds in this medium and transplant them outside? I need to protect seeds from birds and squirrels and this is the best option I can think of.

Thank you for your question and yes I've personally started our sunflower seeds in our peat pellet greenhouses with success. Once the seed sprouts and the plant grows to height it touch the dome, transplant peat pellet and all outside into your flower garden. Hope this helps and our best to you this gardening season. Answer:
Thank you for your question. Remove the lid and do not trim back. Move to a south facing window or if it's warm enough during the day take outside to harden off. We are afraid your plants may have not received the proper light during this stage of growth and have become stringy as the plants are stretching for sunlight. Sometimes that is hard to overcome but if we catch quickly they will pull through. Read More

We suggest to wait until the plant hits the top of the dome in effort to keep the greenhouse effect. Some will suggest taking the dome off and turn slightly to the left or right (dome is still over the plants) for a couple of hours every few days so they get fresh air, then cover back up. That method will not harm the plants however you provide them fresh air when you take the dome off to water. Hope Read More

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great seed starter kit I never had luck with seeds until I tried this. Just put in a super sunny window. I'm gonna be a farmer before you know it...lol. January 13, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by OK for the price. These little things are pretty nifty, but they have a tendency to cause mold if you follow the instructions. On my first one, I followed the directions exactly and left the lid on for about 5 days straight. After that I noticed that most of the of pellets had grown some mold. I left the lid off for a day and let some of the water dry out and the mold growth seemed to slow quite a bit. A lot of it went away and most of the seeds seemed to grow up properly. 3 of them grew up with mold and eventually died. I bought another one about a week later and this time, I put in less than the recommended amount of water. Just enough to get the pellets (or discs or whatever you call them) to expand all the way and be moist on the top. I then planted the seeds and left the lid off and put it under a grow light, giving them about 76F degrees of heat for 16 hours. I then put the lid back on for 12 hours and left it off for 4, watering when the tops appear to be dry. I have been doing this since I bought it (about 7 days ago) and no mold has grown in the second one. Also, if you have seeds that will germinate at different times and / or grow at different rates, these can be difficult. While the sprouts will require more air (lid off), the germinating seeds will still need more moisture (lid on). March 15, 2010
