Answer:
When it comes to how much, I roughly follow instructions on the bag. With the spoon I spread it evenly around each plant (having about 15 tomato plants) above roots area and wider (imaginable- depends on size of plants you have) and then very gently work it into the top of the ground (to prevent washing off). The result is visible within few days. Tomatoes grew bigger and stronger. Great product!

The directions are pretty clear. Never put it right on the base of plant, you could burn the plant.. I sprinkle it by hand 4 to 8 inches away from base and lightly work it into soil with my fingers. When you water soil it will sink to roots.. Just make sure you wash hands well after.

Answer:
To prep the soil, sprinkle 1 cup of Jobe's Organics Heirloom Tomato and Vegetable Food per 10 sq ft. over the surface plus one to two inches of compost. Mix into the top 4 to 5 inches of soil and water thoroughly. If soil has already been prepared, as a side dressing, sprinkle 1 cup of Jobe's per 10 sq. ft or 1 cup per 10 linear feet of row.

Why doesn't Jobes offer more info on application intervals? I used Tomato-Tone for years and they were very specific about applying every 10 days. Do you think I could apply this product the same way?

I recommend you do not apply every ten days. You must carefully follow the application directions on the bag. This product will quickly caused "fertilizer burn" to your tomato plants if overapplied.

You will find many scientific and less scientific advises about fertilizing tomatoes plants. Using this fertilizer I follow general advise: I fertilize when planting tomatoes plants and then when they start fruiting I keep moderately fertilizing every 10-14 days until the frost.

Customer Reviews

8 lb. Organic Heirloom Tomato and Vegetable Plant Food is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great, even late in the season Our tomato plants in containers in our green house were doing great, but our tomatoes outside in raised beds weren't doing so great. I applied the tomato fertilizer in late July to the outdoor plants, and wasn't sure it would have much effect so late in the season, but it did: the yellow leaves at the bottom of the plant mostly went away (meaning the problem was a nutritional deficiency, rather than me over watering or under-watering the plants). I saw a lot more fruit as well (yes, tomatoes are fruit). I will definitely use it in the spring as soon as I put out seedlings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made my tomatoes plentiful This year I had more tomatoes than any other year before, the only difference was this fertilizer. The tomatoes were also larger compared to previous years, even though I always use the same seed stock. I am extremely happy with this product. The only caveat to this review would be the odor. It definitely smells like being next to a bone meal company for at least a full day after application. So do not apply it the day you plan a garden party.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Work With I tried this fertilizer indoors this winter on my windowsill herbs in preparation for my spring planting. It mixed readily into the soil, unlike other fertilizers I’ve tried. The soil mixture also easily accepted water; this was a surprise, as usually the surface tension of the water makes it roll into a ball which is hard to absorb. I selected this because of the advertised microorganisms – especially the mycorrizhal – which promote root and plant growth naturally. So far so good – we’ll see how the plants do in the next few months before I plant them outside.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Organic is Always the Best I've used this in the past and it's not a bad product. It is composed of organic solutions such as bone meal & other such components. While it's balanced, it isn't fast acting like regular fertilizers. It is a good choice for long term improvement of the soil especially as it has probiotics in it. That would be especially helpful in a compost pile to help get the process going. I don't dislike the product by any means but it is expensive if you are planting a large garden (which we do) compared with chemical fertilizers or making your own mix using compost and additives. For small gardens it would be more useful & convenient as you wouldn't need to buy larger quantities of components, designate a portion of your yard for a compost pile or in general be inconvenienced. It is ready straight from the package. Good to go. One other benefit of this kind of product is that it lasts in the soil longer than a chemical which leaches out more quickly than soil building products. Of course Organic is always best in the long run.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great boost for my tomatoes My tomatoes were really not growing well in the containers on the deck. However, when I applied this fertilizer, I began to notice that the plants seemed stronger and we finished the season with some nice tomatoes after all. I would recommend starting the fertilizer process earlier obviously, but I was very pleased with the results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really saw a difference! I added this fertilizer to my raised bed garden. I really saw a big difference about a week after using. The amount of tomatoes getting ripe really increased. My eggplant plants, which had been slow growing really took off! The smell isn't the best but the results sure are!
