1650 lbs? Local John Deere dealer says that's not right

My local dealer thinks your rating of 1650 lbs for the capacity of this trailer is off-base. The 21 trailer has a rating of 800 lbs according to the John Deere Web site. The 18 trailer does not have any figure listed for weight capacity. Are you sure this (1650lbs) is correct?

I have owned this trailer model for over 20 years, using it mainly for hauling seasoned firewood. It has been a work horse for me, and a good investment. I cannot speak to the actual load rating, but here are two pictures of my typical load of cherry, or oak firewood.

This dump is NOT worth the $ or worthy of the John Deere name. I bought this expecting a higher quality than the "no-name" brands. First, the sheet metal is quite thinner than I expected. Dents easily and punctures too when you dump sharp rocks into it. Who ever designed the tailgate should be fired/flogged. The handles that keep it closed/locked protrude below the cart so when you want to dump and spread (IE: open tailgate and pull forward) it bends the handles. Backing up bends both the handles and the lower lip of the cart. Lower lip of cart also scrapes up lawn if pulling forward in dump mode. The dump latch fails often dumping the load unexpectedly. I bolted mine to the frame after too many frustrating unintentional dumps thus negating the dump function. The wheels and axles are pretty heavy duty and have not failed whether the cart is filled with stone, firewood or mulch. Frame is adequate also. I would NOT recommend this cart for these reasons. I have owned this cart for 10+ yrs and the only reason I still have it is that I could not return it as all problems arose after the short warranty period expired. If you're buying this intending to use it for "fluffy' stuff (lawn clippings, mulch, fluffy topsoil), it should work but you could save $ and use a cheaper cart for that too. If you're considering this for heavy duty uses (wood, stone, etc) look elsewhere or be as disappointed as I am. There's NO WAY this thing can hold/haul 1,650 lbs either!

That being said, the instructions are brief and to the point. The tolerances on the parts could be better in partcular on the axle frame that bolts to the cart. I needed a c clamp to pull those 2 parts together. They give you a 1/2" bolt and after bolting the back end to the frame, left a gap of over a 1/2" on the front hence the c clamp to help. The instructions had blurry pictures so took a while to figure out how it's put together. It took me well over an hour to piece this together. Other than that I am happy with the strength of this cart. Should last a lifetime.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good trailer, shockingly bad assembly instructions Quality is good, assymbly instructions are comically bad, I am a huge john deere fan but they should be embarrassed for putting there name on the instructions, it shown images of different models, was short two screws and lacked two holes that were supposed to be there which i had to drill.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Steel Cart The cart is excellent! Few nuts were missing. I went to the hardware store to get missing nuts, replace other nuts with nylon locking nuts and get a greese gun. I got the fixed tube to nipple connector, but it is difficult to connect. I plan to get a flexible tube on the geese gun.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Came shipped in a very large cardboard box on a pallet. All the nuts and bolts were correct. Asse... Came shipped in a very large cardboard box on a pallet. All the nuts and bolts were correct. Assembly was a bit of a challenge as the axle support, which bolts to 4 welded brackets under the barrow, did not line up correctly. I had to get a large pair of pliers/channel locks and bend the brackets about 3/8" outward so that the bolts would actually go through both pieces and the nut have some threads to grab. That was the worst part. Also i had to buy a 90 degree elbow for my grease gun in order to attach it to the fiitings on the wheels as there is very little space between the axle hub and grease fitting itself. I have so far only hauled firewood and brush debris around with it, but it is very sturdy and beefy. The tailgate has levers that lock into "shoulder" bolts so it is easy to release and latch down when necessary. I haven't dumped anything, but it does have a release on the towing tongue that would allow the cart to dump backwards (assuming the tailgate was unlatched) but that probably won't be something i ever have to do.
