Answer:
The John Deere dealeer told me I would need special "bagger blades" with the bagger unit. They quoted $50. They are $35 at Home Depot and Lowes.

Answer:
They have special 'uplift' blades which creates more suction to flow the grass cuts into the chute. Also another is that if the grass is wettish it will get stuck in the first chute tube and you will see grass being blown out on your right side indicating restriction. Some designs have clear panels so you can see if this happens and some do not.

Not that I'm aware of. Mine is working great with the blades that came on the mower.

Answer:
I did not change from mulching blades to straight blades because the mulching blades work just fine. I did find that even though my blades were sharp, I sharpened them again and they worked better.

Answer:
Yes. The bagger is not satisfactory without them. I got high lift blades from a John Deere parts dealer and the bagger now works great. Home Depot had the best price I'd seen on the bagger, but the blades they offered were the same as the blades that came with my mower deck. The high lift blades were a little over $46 at John Deere.

Answer:
No. I just use the blades that came with the tractor. Unless the grass is not too long and very dry I usually have to cut the grass very slowly. Otherwise, the grass with clog up the chute.

Answer:
No, there are not any special blades required for use with a bagger/collection system. The velocity of the blades is all that's required to propel the cuttings up the collection chute. Make sure you always have the throttle on full power, or the collection system will not function properly due to the diminished blade velocity.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 212 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good mower, but over priced by Deere. I ordered the mower and bagger on line and they shipped it out pretty fast. The bagger got delivered quickly to my home, but i guess john deere has a policy that they deliver the mower to the closest Deere dealer. That dealer took forever to deliver it to my home. I've now mowed three times with it and it worked great. But, it is far more expensive then the competitors comparable models and therefore not a great VALUE. I recommend this product if value is not a concern. August 6, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works Great for me! Not sure what the problem so many people are having with this. Works great for me on my D110. Maybe they redesigned it after complaints. If so, JD should change the model number so the bagger can get the reviews it deserves. Picture attached is after I emptied one bag. Can't wait for the Fall. July 4, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Bought it for Fall Leaves - Works Great (Despite Negative Reviews) Let me start off by saying that I was very concerned after ordering this twin bagger because of all the negative reviews I read on HD Website. After receiving it and using it on my lawn I couldn't be happier with it! The negative reviews have some truth behind them and I am writing this review because I want to give everyone a straight forward overview of the product. 1. POOR DESIGN - I read quite a few reviews that John Deere designed the chute fitting to the deck improperly and that you need to attach a bungee cord to get it to work. Preparing for this, I went out and bought a bungee all set to use it, but I actually found I did NOT need it. The attachment fits perfectly but it is a little tricky to get into all the grooves. You really need to take your time and make sure it aligns correctly. It's easy to just rush the connection but you will get poor results. (I've attached a picture that should help explain what I mean) 2. BAGGER CLOGS - This is true. I used my bagger for about 4 hours and it did Clog a handful of times so I can understand the frustration of some of the other reviews who bought it to catch grass clippings... but i will say that in terms of leaf pick-up it worked flawlessly and it also worked very well on catching short grass too. The only time I experienced any issues were in certain sections of my lawn where the grass had grown much higher and when I went over it, it clumped together and clogged the chute. Clearing the clog was easy (although a pain in the butt to do multiple times). I would not recommend using this bagger to catch tall-thick wet grass. It only is functional for leaf pickup and shorter grass clippings (less then 1.5 inches). If you are trying to use it for anything more you will go mad. 3. REAR BAGS FILL UNEVEN - Completely Untrue - at least in my experience for both Leaves and Grass. Both bags filled evenly every time and were a breeze to remove and dump and reattach. The one thing everyone does seem to agree on is the quality of the mesh and I will tell you that even after reading the reviews I was impressed with them. They are high quality. 4. DIFFICULT ASSEMBLY - Not at all. Really there is only 3 bolts that need to be tightened and the instructions call for 2 hours. If you have a ratchet set you can get it done in 30 minutes. But like I mentioned earlier, take your time attaching the chute to the mower deck and do that piece first before attaching the upper arm of the chute (the one with the handle). It will make for better performance. I am extremely happy with my bagger, but again I bought it primarily for leaf pickup and fall clean-up. But as i mentioned, in my experience it works equally as well for short grass clippings, just don't expect the world from it in terms of mowing a pasture. Hope this review helps. October 17, 2013
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by John Deere Bagger Bagger works really well for what it was designed for. Leaves your lawn looking like a golf course, but it's lots of work. If grass is even a little bit damp, chute clogs and is is hassle to unclog. Also, collection bags are incredibly heavy if allowed to fill all the way up and can be a real pain to remove from carrier to dump. If bags are only allowed to fill half way, easier to empty but twice as many trips to unload. Like I said back breaking but unit does a good job. In my opinion, just mulch, much better for your lawn. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Saves time but understand a few things about this. This requires the more curved lift bladed to work better as well as if the grass is even a hint of wet it will adhere to the tubes and start to clog it. You can tell if there is a clog when you look down t the right and see grass blowing out the side. Means it is taking the easy way out. Sometimes you can tap the tube but really you can't tell when or how bad it is. Just get plastic sheeting and lay it down and let the grass fall out of the tube. Take plastic sheeting and dump into one of the two containers. Despite its small limitations this is far better than before. I even use it to grind up small branches and leaves like a vacuum mower! Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Does not effectively transfer grass clippings to rear-mounted bags. Continuously clogs!!!! The grass clogs up at the chute entrance, at the cutting deck. Does not blow grass clippings up through the chute into the catcher bags in the rear of the mower. We have cleaned accumulated grass from the under carriage of the cutting deck numerous times and follow the mfg's instructions to a "T", however, it simply doesn't effectively move clippings into the bag. We have been mowing the past 2 wks withouth the chute attached which is counter-productive to what we purchased the bagger for ($350). Definately not worth $350!!! It's more of a rip-off. We don't like raking 1+ acres of grass clippings every week!!!! July 1, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Glad I bought it. This bagger works great. I didn't have any problems with it. It did a great job bagging my clippings and leaves left over from the fall and never clogged. I too thought it was a bit pricey. I don't know if I got an older model, but I don't think my bags came with handles on the bottom as mentioned in a previous review. It was a little difficult transferring the clippings to a paper yard waste bag the county requires in order for it to be picked up curbside. Handles on the bottom would have made it easier. A lower price would have gotten it 5 stars. A way to efficiently dump from the bottom into another bag or recaptable would get it six. May 12, 2008
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Seems to work very well I went to Lowe's and the salesman said you can't get these baggers. I asked why and he told me the demand was to great and so they quit making them. I told him I can order one from Home Depot and he suggested I get it from them. He even printed the product info for Home Depot. I drove to Home Depot and they helped me order it online. I got the bagger a few days later and put it on my D130. Was done in 30 minutes and went right to work. I ordered the high lift blades but haven't put them on yet. It worked great and I'm very satisfied. I'm still confused about my Lowes experience. October 13, 2014
