Answer:
The John Deere dealeer told me I would need special "bagger blades" with the bagger unit. They quoted $50. They are $35 at Home Depot and Lowes.

Answer:
They have special 'uplift' blades which creates more suction to flow the grass cuts into the chute. Also another is that if the grass is wettish it will get stuck in the first chute tube and you will see grass being blown out on your right side indicating restriction. Some designs have clear panels so you can see if this happens and some do not.

I did not change from mulching blades to straight blades because the mulching blades work just fine. I did find that even though my blades were sharp, I sharpened them again and they worked better.

Answer:
Yes. The bagger is not satisfactory without them. I got high lift blades from a John Deere parts dealer and the bagger now works great. Home Depot had the best price I'd seen on the bagger, but the blades they offered were the same as the blades that came with my mower deck. The high lift blades were a little over $46 at John Deere.

Answer:
No. I just use the blades that came with the tractor. Unless the grass is not too long and very dry I usually have to cut the grass very slowly. Otherwise, the grass with clog up the chute.

Answer:
No, there are not any special blades required for use with a bagger/collection system. The velocity of the blades is all that's required to propel the cuttings up the collection chute. Make sure you always have the throttle on full power, or the collection system will not function properly due to the diminished blade velocity.

Customer Reviews

100 Series 42 in. Twin Bagger for Tractor is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 212.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tip to Make The Chute Work i have a Deere LA100 bought new in 2007 and I also every attachment for it including the Twin Bagger. I had the exact same issues that most reviewers have here that rated the bagger very low - the clogging chute - and I went to the JD main store in Massachusetts for an unrelated reason but while there mentioned the clogging bagger. I told them it was poorly designed and the salesman told me he had received complaints about the same issue I was having. He said there were no plans to make a different designed chute but did give me a tremendous tip that has worked ever since. He said to use a Bungee Cord, attach it to the rods that hold the chute on the tractor, wrap it around the chute (near where the handle is on the top piece) and this would pull the chute closer to the tractor. It not only has stopped the chute from clogging but since using the Bungee Cord both bags fill evenly where before only the left one (facing from the rear of the tractor) would fill. Until John Deere changes the design of the chutes this problem will continue but is very easily rectified with a 2 foot Bungee Cord wrapped around the tube and back to the two rods. I have noticed that if the lawn is wet (not morning dew but wetter) that the tube will still clog and I would assume any chute would do this if the lawn was wet. I have a very large yard to mow and this tractor and dual baggers work perfectly now that I have the cord. I know this is a poor answer to very expensive equipment but as mentioned, it is a design flaw but is easily rectified. Hope this helps those that have the tractor and twin bagger...........try the Bungee Cord - it does work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works like a charm My mower is two years old so I did not have to drill a hole in the mower deck to install the bottom tube connection. A template is provided in the directions if you don't have a drilled hole. It took about 20 minutes to put together even though it stated in the instructions that it would take 2 hours. I use the same mulching blades that came with the mower and the leaves flow easily into the bags. I drive slowly through dense spots and empty the bag often. If you do overfill the bags, the tubes leading to the bags easily detach in the middle and are cleaned out with little difficulty. I was skeptical and had some trepidation after reading other reviews, but I am very pleased I made this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bought it for Fall Leaves - Works Great (Despite Negative Reviews) Let me start off by saying that I was very concerned after ordering this twin bagger because of all the negative reviews I read on HD Website. After receiving it and using it on my lawn I couldn't be happier with it! The negative reviews have some truth behind them and I am writing this review because I want to give everyone a straight forward overview of the product. 1. POOR DESIGN - I read quite a few reviews that John Deere designed the chute fitting to the deck improperly and that you need to attach a bungee cord to get it to work. Preparing for this, I went out and bought a bungee all set to use it, but I actually found I did NOT need it. The attachment fits perfectly but it is a little tricky to get into all the grooves. You really need to take your time and make sure it aligns correctly. It's easy to just rush the connection but you will get poor results. (I've attached a picture that should help explain what I mean) 2. BAGGER CLOGS - This is true. I used my bagger for about 4 hours and it did Clog a handful of times so I can understand the frustration of some of the other reviews who bought it to catch grass clippings... but i will say that in terms of leaf pick-up it worked flawlessly and it also worked very well on catching short grass too. The only time I experienced any issues were in certain sections of my lawn where the grass had grown much higher and when I went over it, it clumped together and clogged the chute. Clearing the clog was easy (although a pain in the butt to do multiple times). I would not recommend using this bagger to catch tall-thick wet grass. It only is functional for leaf pickup and shorter grass clippings (less then 1.5 inches). If you are trying to use it for anything more you will go mad. 3. REAR BAGS FILL UNEVEN - Completely Untrue - at least in my experience for both Leaves and Grass. Both bags filled evenly every time and were a breeze to remove and dump and reattach. The one thing everyone does seem to agree on is the quality of the mesh and I will tell you that even after reading the reviews I was impressed with them. They are high quality. 4. DIFFICULT ASSEMBLY - Not at all. Really there is only 3 bolts that need to be tightened and the instructions call for 2 hours. If you have a ratchet set you can get it done in 30 minutes. But like I mentioned earlier, take your time attaching the chute to the mower deck and do that piece first before attaching the upper arm of the chute (the one with the handle). It will make for better performance. I am extremely happy with my bagger, but again I bought it primarily for leaf pickup and fall clean-up. But as i mentioned, in my experience it works equally as well for short grass clippings, just don't expect the world from it in terms of mowing a pasture. Hope this review helps.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not work I have tried this bagging system for three days. I actually bought the mower to get a bagging system. I have also tried the bungee cord as suggested. It plain does NOT work. The grass is dry no problems in that area, it has not rained for days. I get one pass, clear chute, one pass, clear chute. To say it picks up 50% is being generous. On the second pass, with dry clippings on the ground, it plugs. You may get another 25% but no more. I hope you have long arms and a lot of patience. Complete waste of my money. I am battling a sticker problem and I need to bag, this is a complete waste of effort and money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Product As long as you buy the "bagging" mower blades, this product works great. I originally tried using the bagger without the bagging blades and the chute would clog every couple of minutes. Once I switched to the proper blades, this works as it should and I have no complaints. Spend the extra $40 for the better blades and you will be happy too. The blades create more air pressure to force the grass up the chute and it makes all of the difference. If Home Depot doesn't carry the bagging blades, go to your local John Deere dealer and pick some up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is great, but you need the high-lift blade! After reading the reviews of this bagger, I was sceptical... sounded like the bagger would clog easy and be more hassle than it was worth. What they don't tell you is that in order for this to work well, you need to have high lift blades installed on your tractor. They cost about $50 and are easy to install, but to my knowledge Home Depot does not sell them. You have to go to a John Deere store to purchase them. The high lift blade creates more wind, which propels the grass clippings up the chute and into the bagger. I mowed my lawn, which was very long and soaking wet, and had no trouble at all. What would normally have taken 2 hours with many clogs, I was able to mow in under an hour, didn't clog once. I don't consider myself to be too handy, but it took me about an hour to assemble, the directions were a little confusing. I do wish the bags were a little bigger.
Date published: 2013-07-07
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The bagger works great, however...... This bagger is useless with the bagger blades I bought with the bagger. If the grass is lush, it makes no difference if the grass is dry on the outside. If the clippings are longer than an inch, the chute clogs almost immediately. Slowing down the mowing rate makes no difference. HOWEVER, go to a John Deere parts department and get the high lift blades. The performance difference is amazing. I mow at a normal rate and the chute never clogs. Even if the clippings are 2 inches long. And the cut on the lawn is excellent. Get the right blades and you'll like it!
Date published: 2014-06-03
Rated 5 out of 5 by from easy to use assembles with some effort but once installed works fine easy to empty. cannot go thru big piles of leaves (oak) have to thin them out first or chute pluges same way if leaves are wet you have to go slow. if leaves are dry you and go faster you need the high lift blades for best results
