Customer Questions & Answers

Reviews are'nt flattering, has JD's 175 lb. tow spreader been improved, I want to stay green and yellow.

You won't find any of the other spreaders to be different. The capacity puts to much pressure on the gears that spin everything. They will break. I just placed a piece of plywood in mine with holes drilled in it to keep the down pressure of everything off the spinning shaft. Works great.

175 lb. 3.5 cu. ft. Tow-Behind Broadcast Spreader is rated 1.9 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from NOT HAPPY EITHER My experience with this spreader is similar to others. I bought it two years ago. It has been cleaned after each use & garaged. Today the pinion gear(s) stripped when I had it loaded. It is not easy to disassemble, even if you have the parts, which I did not. I expected more durability from a John Deere. NOT PLEASED!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from John Deere quality? Certainly not what I expect from John Deere. Poor design and quality. Teflon axle bushing are used to support up to 175 lbs of capacity? So poorly designed a metal strap had to be added as an update to support the gear box. A spreader plate held in place by a spring clip and a rubber washer. And wheel hubs attched to the axle by s-clips? Not the mention the plastic flow controll lever that has a plastic lock stop that does not stay in place. Agian not the qaulity and well thought out equipment I have come to expect from John Deere.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Happy Bought this spreader at home Depot two years ago. I've used it two or three times and the pinion gear that drives the spreader stripped out. Not pretty when you have 150lbs of fertilizer loaded to do a job, and have to fish it out because Home Depot doesn't stock replacement parts. Buy at your own risk. I'm a little surprised John Deere puts their name on these.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from buy at your own risk I'm surprised that parts are unavailable for these products. For a relatively expensive product the gears are plastic and will wear in the gearbox. I've got one that's like new and can't get the part to fix the transmission. If anything happens to it, you're sunk!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Shouldnt carry the John Deere name Thumb Mechanism and Flow Control all plastic with very Poor design and will go from a #4 setting to a 10 just by hitting a bump and the design is not engineered in a way to make it tight enough to hold it's position. I made wood wedges and put 2 1/2" stainless bolt with stainless wing nut to be able to tighten up so it will not change its setting. My first use caused me to use triple the Turf Builder as required and caused a lot of burn out strips because the adjustment was going from 4-10 with my back turned to it. Very Poor engineering and I havn't spoke on the plastic gearing. JD must buy this from an outsourse, but they should start looking at it's qualityless engineering. Can't recommend in good faith!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from JUNK - DON'T BUY Very dissappointed. Bought on sale at end of season without researching first. Thught it would be a good product because it's a John Deere product. Broke at beginning of 3rd season as others describe. The connection to the gear box crumbled and cannot find any replacement parts on-line. Will ask a dealer. Expecting it won't be worth my time or expense.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!! I have used this for only ONE SEASON and it is so rusted.....nothing works anymore! I keep this indoors and kept it oiled and sprayed with wd-40 all of the time......Ridiculous!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It let me down I used this once and, like the others on this review board, the gears stripped w/ a loaded hopper. Huge pain! I had to shovel out the hopper to finally take apart the pinion gear on the axle to find out it's plastic!! John Deere what are you thinking!! Home Depot took it back no problem, went a different direction on its replacement.
