Customer Questions & Answers

Reviews are'nt flattering, has JD's 175 lb. tow spreader been improved, I want to stay green and yellow.

Asked by: Anonymous
You won't find any of the other spreaders to be different. The capacity puts to much pressure on the gears that spin everything. They will break. I just placed a piece of plywood in mine with holes drilled in it to keep the down pressure of everything off the spinning shaft. Works great.

Metal or Nylon Gears (differing info)?

One of the questions below asked if metal gears were available for this model. John Deere Support answered "fully enclosed gearbox with metal gears and a plastic housing" but the description of the product says "6:1 glass-filled nylon gears". Which is it?
Asked by: sk
The housing is plastic but the gears are metal. I love this unit. Very rugged. I really loaded it up as have not had any issues.

If your pulling to fast your going to strip gears, take wider turns so the drive wheel doesn't come to a screeching halt. That will wear on the gears. Brinley hardy makes gears, 44.00 just replacing mine. I'm good for another thirteen. Also don't shake the unit when riding. Your making your gears strip!. I put a 2x2 under the mount to tractor and have very little fertilizer left in hopper

Cleaned after EVERY use. Used perhaps 6 times max. Loaded yesterday with one hundred pounds of fertilizer and the gears striped. Fertilizer poured out without spinner moving. Spent forty five minutes trying to fix, no spare parts available, and had to remove the fertilizer by pouring into my tow behind John Deere cart (this product is quite satisfactory) then shovel from cart to temporary trash can. Was not happy. Additionally, setting for spreader opening/stop adjustment does not stay locked, creating situation where opening and closing the fertilizer pour can go from 2 to 10 without recognition by operator. Poor design all around. Will not buy this product again. Expect much higher quality from John Deere for sure. Plus this tow behind was at a premium, nearly a hundred dollars more than the next highest priced unit. VERY DISAPPOINTED!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NOT HAPPY EITHER My experience with this spreader is similar to others. I bought it two years ago. It has been cleaned after each use & garaged. Today the pinion gear(s) stripped when I had it loaded. It is not easy to disassemble, even if you have the parts, which I did not. I expected more durability from a John Deere. NOT PLEASED!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from John Deere quality? Certainly not what I expect from John Deere. Poor design and quality. Teflon axle bushing are used to support up to 175 lbs of capacity? So poorly designed a metal strap had to be added as an update to support the gear box. A spreader plate held in place by a spring clip and a rubber washer. And wheel hubs attched to the axle by s-clips? Not the mention the plastic flow controll lever that has a plastic lock stop that does not stay in place. Agian not the qaulity and well thought out equipment I have come to expect from John Deere.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Happy Bought this spreader at home Depot two years ago. I've used it two or three times and the pinion gear that drives the spreader stripped out. Not pretty when you have 150lbs of fertilizer loaded to do a job, and have to fish it out because Home Depot doesn't stock replacement parts. Buy at your own risk. I'm a little surprised John Deere puts their name on these.
