Not made by John Deere, made by a subcontractor. Quality is poor.
Used once for seeding and once for fertilizer...needed repair.
What a mistake!

The John Deere spreader has a plastic gear system. If you fill the spreader full of product, it will more than likely damage the plastic gear system. The replacement part for the gear system is also plastic. I am disappointed in this John Deere product.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by djuergens Shouldnt carry the John Deere name
Thumb Mechanism and Flow Control all plastic with very Poor design and will go from a #4 setting to a 10 just by hitting a bump and the design is not engineered in a way to make it tight enough to hold it's position. I made wood wedges and put 2 1/2" stainless bolt with stainless wing nut to be able to tighten up so it will not change its setting. My first use caused me to use triple the Turf Builder as required and caused a lot of burn out strips because the adjustment was going from 4-10 with my back turned to it. Very Poor engineering and I havn't spoke on the plastic gearing. JD must buy this from an outsourse, but they should start looking at it's qualityless engineering. Can't recommend in good faith!!

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Tulsaguy John Deere quality?
Certainly not what I expect from John Deere. Poor design and quality. Teflon axle bushing are used to support up to 175 lbs of capacity? So poorly designed a metal strap had to be added as an update to support the gear box. A spreader plate held in place by a spring clip and a rubber washer. And wheel hubs attched to the axle by s-clips? Not the mention the plastic flow controll lever that has a plastic lock stop that does not stay in place. Agian not the qaulity and well thought out equipment I have come to expect from John Deere.

gear strip out easy you would think if john Deere puts their name on it that it would be made better. Then you would think they would make a better replacement part. They haven't. Company's just don't get it. Can not recommend this product!

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by FrustratedVirginian Poor design - not worth the maintenance trouble
I've had this unit for about 3 years. It worked fine for about 2 years and the pinion gear stripped. I found that Brinley-Hardy had a gearbox assembly that I mail-ordered and replaced for about $30. A couple more uses and then I loaded a couple bags of fertilizer and it stripped again! Very frustrated but I tried another gearbox replacement. Last chance on this unit. As other have said, the flow setting is not very secure either.
