Personal opinion/preference is that the controls are not fine enough for grass seed unless you are seeding very large areas.

Yes. In fact the manual had the settings for various different grass seeds. That was the primary reason for purchasing, to reseed areas.

My aerator is not functioning! It is not piercing the soil, nor does it distribute seed or fertilizer evenly.

Answer:
Check the height of your equipment and also the hardness of the soil. It sounds as if you are not coming in contact with the ground but only at the high places. Check the moisture level of your soil as well as the ground contact of the spikes.

Answer:
No, it does not come assembled, but requires assembly. It comes in a heavy-duty cardboard box in sections, requiring assembly. I received mine about three weeks ago and assembled it in about an hour using simple basic tools. It's an excellent product, as you'd expect from John Deere, and works great.

It is a spike, even though they are thin, they will still damage your lawn if you don't follow the directions of checking if your soil is the right moisture level.

40 in. Tow-Behind Combination Aerator-Spreader is rated 2.7 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from not durable This spreader/aerator appears to be identical to the Briny-Hardy unit, so you're essentially paying $230.00 more for a green paint job. BTW, the Briny-Hardy model (and almost certainly this one too) has serious corrosion issues due to the use of carbon steel hopper materials vs stainless steel. Mine started rusting after one season of use. Decent design but poor choice of materials.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible design, broke on first use This is not up to John Deere standards. I've owned several John Deere products and this one does not live up to the standard I'm used to out of Deere Products. Chain came off after first use and there is no way to tighten it. Every use after it the chain comes off which basically means it does not work. Very disappointed.

It's air filled tires allow for smooth operation over uneven surfaces. They do have to improve on their shipping techniques. It was shipped twice with damage due to the flimsy cardboard box it was shipped in.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly designed with too much plastiic in stress areas weak plastic bushings at end of axle, drive chain has no way to tighten, chain cogs misalign after 1 use. chain jumps off. Plastic bushing at end of axle too weak. Plastic spacers between spike units too weak. I have a lot of John Deere equipment. This mess does not measure up to the quality expected on any John deere Product. Very,Very Disappointed. Will Return for refund.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Standard features but designed poorly for operation. Metal deforms easily, tires poor quality. I found the spikes go out of alignment readily but are also easy to bend back into shape. The cheap metal channel that holds the lever that regulates the spreader opening deforms easily and the wing nut is not something you can change the setting for on the fly. The lever that raises and lowers the spikes is not easy to reach and change from your lawn tractor (and I am 6'5".) The tires went flat but don't seal properly against the rims so re-inflating is very difficult.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It broke the first time I used it. I was very pleased to buy this item a week ago, but was quickly disappointed because it broke the first time I used it. Despite soft ground, careful speed, and putting two cinder blocks on it for weight (like the photo showed) the axle eventually bent in the middle, causing the chain to slip off and the spreader to stop working. The center metal support piece is thin metal that bend quite severely. I didn't hit anything like a rock, curb, etc. so I assume perhaps this accessory just wasn't up to moderately uneven ground. I think it was designed for a well-established and smooth "subdivision lawn." Took it right back to the JD dealer. Will see what the warranty covers or doesn't. I think they tried putting two functions in one device and ended up with a cheap piece of machinery.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Missing part and did not put together correctly. One part was missing. It took two different days calling in order to get this part through a number of calls over a three day period. I would be direct from JD to another vender who, as I under stand, put all the parts in the box. They were never very helpfull. JD would not call them for me until the third day when I called (after trying to get them to call before) and told them I am the customer. Finally got the part. The other problem is that I believe other parts might be wrong for this. Some parts will not go together as I believe they should. I am considering returning this item, I just need to look up the procedure for doing this. These comments are breif and not the detail that actually happen, but just an overview. On the other hand, the la45 lawn mower is great!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad parts Wheel assembly was improperly made. On assemblly, the wheel shafts were not parallel. Therefore, one wheel was higher or lower than the other by 25 degrees. Deere was quick to send another assembly, but it had the same defect. I am waiting for another part that I am assured is properly made. Quality control is questionable.
