Customer Questions & Answers

Do you have to purchase seperate mulching blades to use with this item, or is the "cover" all you need?

Asked by: Anonymous
It depends on how tough your grass is and what you are willing to accept. In SW Florida my J D dealer recommended the full mulch insert (not just the mulching cover). The insert comes with 2 mulching blades. On Floritam grass I am cutting to 3.75 inches, and even when the grass gets 6 inches or taller, this system performs flawlessly to the point I have never seen clippings in the grass, and anything you see on the driveway and sidewalk is very small finely cut clippings that disappear when you blow the clippings onto the grass.

42 in. Mulch Cover is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 155.

Product was a perfect fit. I am now able to mulch my lawn without using the collection bags. Saves me so much time, I was able to cut my grass in half the time because I did not have to stop and empty grass clippings and reload every 10-15 minutes. Very big time saver. I would highly recommend this product. Grass clippings help keep the lawn moist without causing rot. Don't need to water as often and the mulch feeds the lawn too.

Not having any place to dispose of my clippings, I've always mulched the grass. Most of the reviews I've read here and on the HD page for this product are focused on installation challenges. I've seen some people that have removed the grass chute and the metal rock guard, but it's not necessary. I've taken some photos, which hopefully come across way better than the faded black and white instructions in the box and anything you'll find on JD's website. I'll take you the process, step by step, below. But first, let's talk about whether "mulching" just requires having this plug and keeping the standard blades. For my D130, and my grass today (relatively long and with some morning dew), the answer is a resounding "yes." I'll likely swap the standard blades out with mulching-specific blades when it's time, but for my 22HP engine and 42" deck, at a 3-1/2" setting, there was no clumping, even with morning dew on the grass tips. Now, let's get that mulch plug installed! The most-challenging part for most will be just getting the grass chute and rock guard up and out of the way so you can see what you're doing. I used a bungee cord at first, but then figured out how to raise and lock the rock guard, which keeps both the guard and the chute clear. The manual says to un-hook the battery and do everything else to make absolutely sure the blades don't randomly start spinning. So, do this all at your own risk. - If you pull the rock guard towards you a little, and to the right, it should unlock so you can lift it up. - Then, if you push it back to the left, while it's in the "up" position, it should lock in place. (Now you can see everything) - Sit on the ground looking at the opening, now work left to right. - In order to not scratch your deck's paint, come from the inside-out with the left hook (work it around a little bit so it locks in--your mulch plug will be upside down). Almost every photo/video have this going from outside-in, but you'll easily scratch your deck's paint. - Next, flip your mulch plug right-side up (rubber band will be twisted, see pic). - Now, feed the left side of the mulch plug into the left side of the opening, so the middle tab on the plug sits flush behind the left side of the deck opening (see pic below). - The bottom of your mulch plug should be sitting in the lip of the deck. - Next, align the cut-out on the top of the mulch plug to fit around the base hinges of the grass chute/rock guard (see pic below). - At this point, everything should feel tight and secure and fitting nicely. - Lastly, take the hook on the right side of the plug and, from behind the bracket to the deck wheel, place the curved hook in the small hole, closest to the wheel (see pic below). Now, you can undo your bungee or just unlock the rock guard and the guard and grass chute will fall back into place. Don't worry if they don't go all the way back down, everything will still work.

The old on give up after 11 years and 850 hours of operation. When I am mowing I use the grass catcher, maybe 10 % of the time or the mulch cover 90% of the time. I remove the discharge chute.. The only way to keep the munch cover in place with the discharge chute removed is to drill holes and attach it with sheet metal screws. It would be nice if I didn't have to take a drill to my brand new John Deere!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Works but only after modifications The deck clearly has had a design change that has not been accounted for in the clip design for the mulch cover. Not only does it not fit out of the box the illustrations don't match the actual deck. Had to take a couple of wrenches to bend around and jury-rig the clips to fit. Recommend only because threre is no alternative if you want to mulch.

Found it difficult to attach due to the type of clips on the cover and the placement of holes on the mower. Was hoping that the use of the cover would allow me to remove the grass chute from the mower, but it has to hold the cover in place. At this time I still have not found a way to put the cover on the mower in a way that suits my purpose.

The hooks on the John Deere cover need to be revised, they will scratch the deck when installing, JD should have put a rubber cap on the end of the strap hooks. Very disappointing to scratch a new never driven mower at the fault of John Deere.

Attach the rear first - pulll forward to get the tab in and the rest aligned - then attach the front. I do wish the discharge cover would stay up while mowing as I have some tight areas
