Are the drive gears metal or plastic?

Asked by: Anonymous
I researched that prior to purchasing my spreader. I was told by the manufacturer that the gears are plastic, so they do not need any lube. They are sealed well inside the plastic housing on the axle. I feel that there are pros & cons on this matter. I will probably use my spreader a couple of years, & then dis-assemble the gear box to check on gear wear, & maybe order another gear box assy. for spare, because it wouldn't be cool if it stopped spreading when you was half done with your yard.

can this Spreader be used for ice melt products

Asked by: Anonymous
The instruction manual says it can be used with Ice Melt & Sand. Hopper and ports are all plastic or coated. Gears are enclosed. Axles and controls are stainless, so I don't think they'll corrode. Would still make sure to really clean the spreader out after using Salt or Calcium ice melt

Customer Reviews

50 lb. Push Broadcast Spreader is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product! This spreader is made by Brinly for John Deere. Brinly owns Spyker spreaders and this is identical to the Spyker 50lb unit which sells for more money. I've used this a lot commercially applying fertilizer for lawns. It covers nice, spreads evenly and is tall enough for someone over 6 feet. It arrived as expected, un-damaged and only took a few minutes to assemble.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product! Overall, this is a great product. This is my second season using this spreader and have had zero issues. I have only spread fertilizer though, not salt. I am using this spreader with Scotts Turfbuilder fertilizer and have been very pleased. Not having a lot of experience fertilizing a lawn, I was nervous about burning the grass and being left with unsightly brown patches. I had no problems whatsoever. Adjusting the flow control was very easy and the flow control handle made stopping and starting the fertilizer flow on the move a breeze. I do have the same scratches on my spreader as those pictured above (thus my four stars) which leads me to believe this occurs during shipping. This could easily be fixed by JD with some cheap bubble wrap or something similar. If it is truly an issue for you, take it back to Home Depot as they have a great return policy. I, instead, chose to sand and paint. My gardening/yard tools are not ornaments in my garage that I expect to look like new for eternity. Due to the environment they are used in (high humidity, in contact with chemicals [salt and/or fertilizer], and occasionally washed after use) I expect that there may be some rust on occasion. IF you adjust the flow control linkage according to the directions, the shut off plate WILL work as it should. This is a matter of tightening two nuts and is not rocket science. There really isn't much assembly to this unit as it is about 75% assembled upon arrival. Why taking the time to adjust two nuts for someone was too much trouble is laughable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Spreader I have ever used. Very stable over an uneven lawn. Large pneumatic rubber tires are a huge plus. Does not bounce around and is very consistent applying product. Used less fertilizer and had no streaking as a result of even distribution. Handle is longer than mass marketed units and that makes control much easier. This is a high-end product that will make lawn care much easier throughout the lawn growing season. Worth the investment. Excellent!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Quality JD product Very good quality product other than the black frame has scatches, well made and made in the USA easy to use. will last many years happy with it. Shipping was very slow by Home Depot, they didn't even ship it for 5-6 days after I ordered it

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Finally a Good Spreader I've been through a series of spreaders that either didn't work properly or broke soon after I bought them. The John Deere has held up through the spring spreading on a half acre of land and spread accurately. So far I'm impressed. Only drawback: hard to assemble with inadequate instructions—took me half the day to get the thing together.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from John Deere produces quality products. This is a quality product, like most JD equipment. I was able to assemble the spreader easily, which is a quality product given what is readily available, I look forward to many years of good use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from better than cheap throw away spreaders used this last weekend with zero issues. Worth spendinga little extra over the cheaper spreaders. I believe this will save money in the long run. I foresee many years of use out of this spreader.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This item is fair at best and should'nt cost as much as it does. This item has basic flaws that make it a little difficult to use as it is stated on the internet. Missing parts and workmanship put into the manufacturing of this spreader is woefully sub par. Right the hopper has stress marks where the screws go into it from the under carriage. This means that it will break soon and then I would have to replace it soon. Right now I do not have time to send it back due to my work schedule. I would suggest that John Deere go back and redesign the unit with better materials that will last longer.
