Customer Reviews

D160 48 in. 25 HP V-Twin Hydrostatic Front-Engine Riding Mower is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still A Great Mower As promised, a review after I've used it all summer. My D160 has 40 hours on it now. The gas "mileage" did get better after it got broke in, about the third time I mowed. Now I can do my two acres without sweating it. It still cuts so well my yard looks like a carpet when I'm done, it's even and there's no problem if it's wet or dry. We've had a LOT of rain this summer, and I haven't had to clean under the deck once, it seems to clean it's self. Now granted, that causes big green blobs of grass to be left after they fly out of the deck, but I'd rather pick those up, then crawl under the mower. I'd bought a spare set of blades to use when the original set got dull, I could switch them out and sharpen the other set when I got around to it. Might have wasted my money, the blades haven't needed sharpening at all yet and they've been in constant use, at least once a week, since early May, in thick, wet grass. It's still the best riding, easiest steering, sharpest turning lawn tractor I've ever owned and I'm still very happy with my purchase. If you live anywhere near Southern Illinois, see the guys at Ideal Lawn & Tractor, they'll treat you right and fix you right up. Best mower I've ever owned.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Cut and Smooth Running I looked at Craftsman, Simplicity and Husqvarna but the D160 is the best of them all. Easy starting and a great 48" cut. Hauled 10Yds of topsoil around a hilly yard and it never complained. Comfortable and the turning radius is fantastic. PTO is smooth and with smart safety features, I don't have to worry about little kids in the yard because I forgot to park it. Great tires that don't destroy the lawn. Finished about 2/3 of an an acre in 45 minutes. People complain about the small gas tank but it's so fuel efficient you won't be filling it up as much as you might think. Cruise control is cool and it's just easy to run. My wife even loves it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Tractor excessive vibration We like the tractor, it mows the lawn well cuts even, and the bagger is great. BUT it vibrates a lot and sucks the gas down. went from an old MTD that used half the gas of this and didn't vibrate much at all. Thinking something was wrong I went to the dealer and got on one there. Their lawn mower vibrated just as much basically so apparently thats just how they are built. I feel it in my feet and the whole thing rattles especially at full throttle while sitting still. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7I65QAcb3LU

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fine tractor for the cost. I've always appreciated JD mowers because they use Briggs engines. The Vanguard V-Twin is a workhorse that will give good service for many years. Due to the larger wheels, the D160 is technically a garden tractor. With GT status comes a robust chassis and a strong drivetrain. Steers easily as well. We've had ours for just over a month, it does a fantastic job of mowing. Very comfortable ride and easy to operate. I especially appreciate the parking brake lock handle on the side of the dash, rather than earlier mowers where it was on the unibody floor and hard to reach from the seat. This tractor replaced an old JD Sabre that, while still in service was showing its age. Purchased at Lowes, paid cash with extended warranty. Owner's manual is concise and easy to follow. Lists regular maintenance items and when they should be performed (also on a decal under the hood). It's imperative that proper lubrication be done, i.e. greasing mower deck spindles, front wheel bushings and steering, or kingpin shafts. If you don't have a grease gun, get one. My only gripe is with the electric PTO engagement. The old Sabre had a manual lever to engage the mower blades, allowing a gradual engagement. With the electric PTO clutch, engagement is sudden and puts a strain on the mower deck belt when engaged. Never much liked the Reverse Mow button, it's an annoyance when backing up while the PTO is engaged. It can be defeated. However, defeating safety features is strongly discouraged. We don't have a lot of ground to mow; less than an acre is actually lawn so fuel tank size isn't a concern. Runs well on E-10 fuel. Manual suggests using fuel stabilizer for long term storage. I'm old-school, prefer to drain the fuel tank and run the carburetor dry before putting her to bed for winter. Don't leave gas set in the carburetor during long term storage. This applies to any engine-driven equipment.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cant beat it for the price It is a very nice mower. Only issues are that the belt cover on the left side always gets a hole worn into it and belt is tight so i dont know why its happening, not a big deal. Engine could be a little quieter. Other than that nice mower. I like the bigger tires than the smaller mowers in the D100 Series. Already has 115 hrs on it and is a 2013 model. Had to get carb worked on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does all I ask it to do! Purchased last summer to maintain my 6 acre property. I found it willing and able to mow with ease. Haul my 10' trailer around the property without breaking a sweat and generally able to do whatever I need to do. This winter I purchased the 44" snowblower attachment. Wow, what a great job in removing about 2 feet of snow. You must have the tire chains and rear weights though! Bogged down in the snow and dirt a few times, but was always able to get myself out. The D 160 seems to be really well built and capable. Plenty of power to do the job! Also found it to be really comfortable. The deluxe seat on the D 160 is a big plus.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Steering Just purchased a D 160 rider and find that the steering shaft has no means to lubricate the upper & lower shaft or the gear mechanism under the deck. What can John Deere do or recommend how to lube this badly needed issue?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Makes mowing and collecting leaves enjoyable! I have only about a 1/3 acre lot, so this may be overkill for my grass, but it's main job is going to be leaf collection in the fall. My back yard has a chain link fence with lots of trees, and leaves work me ten times harder (or more# than grass. I have the bagger system attached to mine, and on the first few outings vacuuming performance #with the bagger system's included high lift blades# is outstanding! I cleared out a LOT of old leaves from both my and a couple of neighbor's lots that border my fence. I'm pleased with the mower, but longevity will be the final determination on how good this mower is. A couple of items I'd like to see addressed: 1. Replace the headlights with some type of LED units #a whiter light than the typical yellowish tint of incandescents#. 2. Fueling - I have no complaint AFA fueling except when the bagger is attached. With the bagger, I have to use a funnel, and it's tough to know when it's full without overflowing. 3. Fuel Tank Size - I haven't had it long enough to tell yet, but a 2 gallon tank sounds awfully small for this mower! It probably doesn't affect me as much as it would someone with a much larger yard. 4. Deck Height Adjustment - I like to exit the mower from the left side, and the first time I did so, I nailed myself in the leg on the deck height adjustment handle. The last few times I've exited, I had the handle in the highest position so I cleared it easily - haven't had enough experience to tell if I'll automatically worm my way around the height adjuster #when at cutting setting) or if it's going to be a pain to maneuver around each time I exit? I also picked up one of their PT10 Poly Carts - work around the yard has gotten so much easier with this mower, collector, and cart!
