Rated 5 out of 5Â by HDjunkie 54" mowing deck & plenty of power!
The 54" deck makes it easy to mow my 5+ acres. Yes, it's still new, but it has a good, smooth-running engine with a good amount of power. The hydrostatic drive makes driving easy, paired with a tight turning radius. The adjustable seat, lumbar support & cruise control are the icing on the cake. Price was a bit higher than expected (vs. 42" & 46" models) but if this mower came with the quality known to Deere products, it was well-spent. Looking forward to many future seasons & trying out the snow blower attachment in the winter.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by F15Guy Great mower for large yards, cut 45 mins. From my cutting time. Every thing works well and very easy to get to.
Use mover for several things in addition to cutting large yard and it does every thing well. It pulls everything I hook to it with out a problem. Another great thing about the mover is great support I have received from the local John Deere dealer which happens to be same people who seat it up from the factory so I know all the servicing is being done correctly. All required pre-use are very well marked and easy to get to, Great engineering went into the mower, and this is from a 30 plus year Aircraft Engineer. Totally happy with purchase. P.S. Ron our local Home Depot outdoor power department guy has been at his job 20 plus years, bought my last JD from him 15 years ago, can't bet his experience, this went a long way in deciding to return to same store for my mower.

Would not have bought this John Deere D170 if I had known that the Hydrostatic transmission was only good on flat ground. After about 15 to 20 minutes of run time it will not pull itself up small slope's, much less up any inclines of 10 to 20 feet. Took it in to the John Deere dealer for repair, and they had it for 2 months and said it runs fine in there (flat) paved parking lot. Also noticed that when you park it sideways on uneven ground for about 10 minutes or so, then restart it, it won't move forward until you go in reverse. Was told by a John Deere sale's person that the D-series, that are made for the Big Box Stores are of poor quality and they are getting a lot of complaints from customers.
I have one year left on the Warranty. Will keep using it until it quits on flat ground.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by Gman I love this mower!
I replaced a 20 year old L130 with this D170 and could not be happier. I was concerned about some reviews I read that the 54 inch mower deck might not cut evenly. After making the first round of the yard, I was not happy with the cut. I simply adjusted the guide wheels and have the best lawn in the area. I cut 3 acres of St. Augustine weekly...apply weed and feed and pest control with a tow-behind spreader 2 times per year...and tow several utility trailers all year long. Reliable starting and pulling with a great big mower deck...and...it's that great yellow and green! Just try and take it from me!!

Rated 1 out of 5Â by jebm Big Mistake!?!
I bought a D170 about three weeks ago through Home Depot. At 5.5 hrs the battery died. While mowing yesterday the RIO switch (allows the blades to continue working while in reverse) stopped working, so I used the PTO to disengage the blades when backing up. Just as I finished, the PTO would no longer re-engage the blades. I shut the tractor down and now it won't start at all. Doesn't even try. Called the JD dealer and at the service tech's request, tried pushing in the RIO to start the tractor, but that did nothing. Tried pulling out the PTO and starting, heard a click but nothing else. After 12.3 hrs?!?! Now the dealer, for a mere $70 transport fee, is going to pick it up three days from now. Another week to get it back.
