Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by HDjunkie 54" mowing deck & plenty of power!
The 54" deck makes it easy to mow my 5+ acres. Yes, it's still new, but it has a good, smooth-running engine with a good amount of power. The hydrostatic drive makes driving easy, paired with a tight turning radius. The adjustable seat, lumbar support & cruise control are the icing on the cake. Price was a bit higher than expected (vs. 42" & 46" models) but if this mower came with the quality known to Deere products, it was well-spent. Looking forward to many future seasons & trying out the snow blower attachment in the winter.

This is my second year using this mower. Halfway through the summer last year the bearings in the belt idler pulleys went bad. Took the mower to John Deere and they replaced them. Halfway through the summer this year they went bad again. Apparently they are using very cheap bearings. I expect that next summer I will have to replace them once again at my expense.
Bought the mulcher kit for 200+ dollars and it is useless unless you like to drive over the same spot 3 times in 3 different directions to pick up the mess and uncut grass it leaves behind. It doesn't make any difference if the grass is wet or dry, long or short or how fast it is driven. It still leaves a mess and uncut grass. Even without the mulcher kit, mowing with discharge it leaves uncut grass.
I have had it at the dealer twice. A tech even came to the house to see how bad it mows. He admits something is wrong but nearly two years later nothing has been done about it.
John Deere used to make good mowers but the next mower I buy won't be green.

The mower deck was delivered slightly damaged (paint chipped off in a 3" by 3" section). John Deere dealer that delivered the tractor said the mower came in a crate so it was John Deere's fault. Either way, John Deere or dealer should have noticed the damage prior to delivery. I do have to say that the dealer did repaint the section and it does look like nothing happened. Regardless, quality control was not evident.

I bought a D170 about three weeks ago through Home Depot. At 5.5 hrs the battery died. While mowing yesterday the RIO switch (allows the blades to continue working while in reverse) stopped working, so I used the PTO to disengage the blades when backing up. Just as I finished, the PTO would no longer re-engage the blades. I shut the tractor down and now it won't start at all. Doesn't even try. Called the JD dealer and at the service tech's request, tried pushing in the RIO to start the tractor, but that did nothing. Tried pulling out the PTO and starting, heard a click but nothing else. After 12.3 hrs?!?! Now the dealer, for a mere $70 transport fee, is going to pick it up three days from now. Another week to get it back.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by F15Guy Great mower for large yards, cut 45 mins. From my cutting time. Every thing works well and very easy to get to.
Use mover for several things in addition to cutting large yard and it does every thing well. It pulls everything I hook to it with out a problem. Another great thing about the mover is great support I have received from the local John Deere dealer which happens to be same people who seat it up from the factory so I know all the servicing is being done correctly. All required pre-use are very well marked and easy to get to, Great engineering went into the mower, and this is from a 30 plus year Aircraft Engineer. Totally happy with purchase. P.S. Ron our local Home Depot outdoor power department guy has been at his job 20 plus years, bought my last JD from him 15 years ago, can't bet his experience, this went a long way in deciding to return to same store for my mower.

I purchased the D170 after my L130's transmission died for the second time. I was concerned to learn the SAME transmission is in the D170 as well, but purchased it anyway. I've had it for 2 years now and so far so good. Initially the 54" inch deck was producing less than stellar results, but using the service manually I adjusted the deck. The result was an even cut. I installed the mulching kit which was kind of pricy in my opinion, but after using it for the first time I learned it was well worth the price. I used to sweep my lawn due to the number of fallen leaves in the fall, the mulching kit eliminates them in one pass. That reduces the number of hours I'm out there during fall clean up and the amount of wear and tear on the tractor itself. I agree the deck hight adjustment lever is in the way if you get on/off the tractor from the left side so I've made it a habit to use the right side instead. I use a utility cart, aerator, snow plow, spreader and still use the sweeper in the spring to pick up all the sticks that fell throughout the winter with no reduced power in the transmission. Deck removal and installation is very easy and takes less time than my L130. Servicing is easy and the owners manual is well written with excellent illustrations. I'm very pleased with my purchase and expect the D170 to last a lot long than the 7 years I got out of the L130.

I've had this mower for about three months now and could not be happier. I had previously owned an older mower without a hydrostatic transmission. This mower is solid. I don't have many steep grades or rough terrain areas to mow, but I did notice that this mower has plenty of power. The mower deck is nice and wide at 54 inches and can be removed from the mower easily. (I had to remove it already as another family member ran over a towel in our yard and got hung up in the blades) This was a good test for me to see how easy attachments would go on and off the mower.
The speed at which this tractor mows is fantastic. Compared to my previous mower, this thing has cut my mowing time in half. Yes, in half!
The tight turning radius is an absolute awesome feature for a tractor of this size.
The ease of use is also an item to note. The parking lock/gear is easy to use as well as the cruise control feature.
The only minor item I would change on the mower is the location of the deck height lever on the left side of the mower. If you get off the tractor on the left side (opposite the mower chute) the lever jabs my thigh. So, I just get off the other side of the mower. No big deal.
Overall, I would recommend this tractor. It's still made in America with John Deere quality standards. I believe this model is made in Greenville, TN. Even though it was purchased at Home Depot, a local John Deere dealer delivered the tractor to our house and went over all the features and how to use the tractor. He was very helpful!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Tom76 Overpriced but pretty good machine.
Product arrived with broken accessories door. Reverse foot pedal designed poorly from ergonomic point of view. Have to pull back with right foot rather than just push down to reverse the mower. Handle that adjusts deck height is improperly placed. It catches your bottom when you try to exit the mower so you always have to exit to the right. Poor backup power on slight incline.
