Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Kris4956 Frustrating Purchase
I started off giving this rating one star, but didn't want people thinking I was giving the tractor one star. It was frustration from the time I walked in at around 11 this morning and just felt defeated when I left 3 hours later.
Today was tax free weekend in Louisiana. Apparantly I was not the only one taking advantage of this fact, as the place was packed. The tractor I wanted was the JD D-170. There were 3 on display and maked down from $2799 to $2099.25. I liked them numbers and was ready to make my purchase.
Problems began when none of the registers would scan the barcode on the yellow label. A good 30 minutes went by just trying to pay for the mower. Finally, a manager came, took my recipt to their office and scanned it from end there and sent it back to the register.
Got it paid for, but the manager said he had to enter some serial number. I thought I was walking with him but when I got to the mower, he was already writing numbers down... and ignoring me. We start to walk back into Home Depot and I say, this is the mower I want. He says, "Oh, I thought it was the other mower. The other mower was not a John Deere, and the other mower was only 950 and red. Big difference between mowers.
OK, I am back at the register and now they need to call the guy who has the key to unlock the mowers. He comes up front after 10 minutes of waiting. We go outside, I drop the gate/ramp to my trailer. Mower goes in with no trouble. Put the gate/ramp back up and secure. I ask him for the manual and the key. He says I have to go back up to the front.
Back up front, they ask me what I need now. I say I need the manual and the key. Two ladies began looking though an unkemp drawer of assorted manuals. Finally one woman puts a manual in front of me and says there you go. The other woman returns with a key she had taken off the shelf and said it was a universal key. So no John Deere key I guess. I open up the manual and every word was in Spanish. Except John Deere. I asked if I could have the english manual. She took my manual and was trying to explain that they have differenrent sections, but nope... all spanish.
So another manager comes along and says she will take care of me. She said I could walk around the store as it would take awhile to print 70 pages. I finally got my manual... all 70 single sides pages of it. She then asked my if I had gotten the white glove treatment. All I could utter out was "huh"? She said, "you know, they are supposed to crank it up and show you how everything is supposed to work". I told her I got the "no glove" treatment and left.
Got home, fuelded it up, checked the oil levels, looked good. All my family came out like the Griswalds and sing Happy Birthday to me. Turned the key to crank it. Nothing
As if my family could read my mind, not another word was spoken as everyone returned indoors. I checked my battery terminals. They were super lose. I could turn the nuts by hand. So I used a wench and made the connections tight. Put on a charger for 30 minutes and it cranked up with no problem.
The mower works really well. I did manage to do my yard and it did that very well. It was filthy when I bought it. I'll give it a really wash tomorrow and make it look awesome.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by HDjunkie 54" mowing deck & plenty of power!
The 54" deck makes it easy to mow my 5+ acres. Yes, it's still new, but it has a good, smooth-running engine with a good amount of power. The hydrostatic drive makes driving easy, paired with a tight turning radius. The adjustable seat, lumbar support & cruise control are the icing on the cake. Price was a bit higher than expected (vs. 42" & 46" models) but if this mower came with the quality known to Deere products, it was well-spent. Looking forward to many future seasons & trying out the snow blower attachment in the winter.

I purchased the lawn mower to replace a 42 inch JD riding mower which I had originally purchased 10 years ago at the "local" dealership. Local is in quotation marks as I live in a very rural area so its in the next town over--about 22 miles from my farm.
Since I live on a farm I have a huge lawn and not much time to spend on a mower given all my other farm/yard work I need to do in the summer. I had big aspirations for this lawn mower--bigger deck so less time mowing, brand new so minimal down time on maintenance.
However, I've been so far disappointed more than I've been happy in the barely a month since I've purchased the product. Firstly, I ordered on-line as I didn't have the time to spend shopping. The ordering was okay. I had asked if there was any other special financing beside the 12 months no interest through the Home Depot Card. I was told no. However, a week after I received the mower I got a card in the mail with an offer for 24 months no interest. Thanks, Home Depot for not alerting me to your big push to offer better financing terms A WEEK LATER!
Moving on....the mower was to have been delivered to my local dealership and given an inspection/white glove treatment and delivered at my convenience so they could go over the mower with me. Instead, I was out of town for work when I got a call from a truck driver 20 minutes from my place (he was coming from about 120 miles away) wondering about directions to my farm and if he could get his semi up my driveway to drop off the mower. I scrambled (called a neighbor to inquire about dropping it off there as my driveway is too narrow for semis to make the turn) and finally got a hold of my brother to check it out after he was done with work.
He found the lawnmower, in a metal crate at the end of my driveway. He spend about 2 hours uncrating it and assembling it. He was worried about the deck though--more on that in a bit.
I called Home Depot to complain about this poor service and after a series of calls the JD mower guy from the local dealership came over and hauled it back (sort of reluctantly) to the dealership to inspect. He returned it within hours stating it was fine (after using it to haul the metal crate onto his trailer.)
I used it 3 times to mow my 2 plus acre lawn without problems until suddenly it started scalping my lawn. Lo and behold the height adjuster was stuck at 2 inches.
Currently, I've been without use of the mower for 5 days. My lawn is reaching astronomical heights as I can't mow. I had to spend time on the phone with Home Depot and the local dealership in order to get them to come out and take it to repair. It's been going on 3 days and no word on my mower. Is it okay? Is it safe? Is it worried it won't come back home? Beats the heck out of me as no one cares to inform me...yet I did just get the bill in the mail.
The photo is of my lawn...not mowed, being neglected and turning into a hay field. Hmm...maybe I should've invest the $2900 in goats.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Fatjack John Deere D170 Riding Mower
The mower deck was delivered slightly damaged (paint chipped off in a 3" by 3" section). John Deere dealer that delivered the tractor said the mower came in a crate so it was John Deere's fault. Either way, John Deere or dealer should have noticed the damage prior to delivery. I do have to say that the dealer did repaint the section and it does look like nothing happened. Regardless, quality control was not evident.

The mower is a fine product. I am very happy with the purchase. The only problem for me is that when I purchased the accessories online in the store at the same time I was not informed everything was on back order. I purchased my mower over a month ago, I am supposed to receive them today from ups. When purchasing A product online that is out of stock it should be made known that it is on back order. I was upset when getting an email saying so but the worst part for me was there was no estimated date for shipping.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by jebm Big Mistake!?!
I bought a D170 about three weeks ago through Home Depot. At 5.5 hrs the battery died. While mowing yesterday the RIO switch (allows the blades to continue working while in reverse) stopped working, so I used the PTO to disengage the blades when backing up. Just as I finished, the PTO would no longer re-engage the blades. I shut the tractor down and now it won't start at all. Doesn't even try. Called the JD dealer and at the service tech's request, tried pushing in the RIO to start the tractor, but that did nothing. Tried pulling out the PTO and starting, heard a click but nothing else. After 12.3 hrs?!?! Now the dealer, for a mere $70 transport fee, is going to pick it up three days from now. Another week to get it back.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Rizkid Excellent mower if you have a few acres to mow.
I bought this, my first John Deere mower, about a year ago and find it very strong, versatile and easy to use if you read the manual carefully. I mow about 4 acres filed with Palmetto palms and other obstacles and it handles it all very well. I would definitely recommend this mower. The John Deere franchiser was also extremely helpful.

I've had this mower for about three months now and could not be happier. I had previously owned an older mower without a hydrostatic transmission. This mower is solid. I don't have many steep grades or rough terrain areas to mow, but I did notice that this mower has plenty of power. The mower deck is nice and wide at 54 inches and can be removed from the mower easily. (I had to remove it already as another family member ran over a towel in our yard and got hung up in the blades) This was a good test for me to see how easy attachments would go on and off the mower.
The speed at which this tractor mows is fantastic. Compared to my previous mower, this thing has cut my mowing time in half. Yes, in half!
The tight turning radius is an absolute awesome feature for a tractor of this size.
The ease of use is also an item to note. The parking lock/gear is easy to use as well as the cruise control feature.
The only minor item I would change on the mower is the location of the deck height lever on the left side of the mower. If you get off the tractor on the left side (opposite the mower chute) the lever jabs my thigh. So, I just get off the other side of the mower. No big deal.
Overall, I would recommend this tractor. It's still made in America with John Deere quality standards. I believe this model is made in Greenville, TN. Even though it was purchased at Home Depot, a local John Deere dealer delivered the tractor to our house and went over all the features and how to use the tractor. He was very helpful!
