Customer Questions & Answers

Does this mower mow in reverse or do the blades disengage?

Asked by: Beanie
Yes it mows in reverse by moving the handles backward. I back into tight areas to mow corners.

What is the engine? Mfr?
Asked by: fran
Thank you for contacting the Home Depot website. The engine is a A 20-hp* (14.9-kW) V-twin engine that provides plenty of power and torque to handle tough mulching, mowing, and bagging conditions which is manufactured by John Deere. The V-twin cylinder is designed for greater torque, lower vibration, and improved sound quality.

Customer Reviews

Z235 42 in. 20 HP V-Twin Hydrostatic Zero-Turn Riding Mower - California Only is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 86.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best 42" residential zero turn. I bought this zero turn mower last July (2013) with the mulching kit installed. I looked at and compared the John Deere Z235 with other 42" zero turns by Craftsman, Toro, Ariens, Cub Cadet, Husqvarna, and Troy-Built. The John Deere had the best features for the price compared to competing 42" zero turn mowers. The fit and finish is excellent and much better than competing models. With the mulching kit this can mow rather long grass at a decent speed without clumping. The only issues I have had with the machine are the location of the fuel fill which makes it difficult to fill without a little spillage and the lack of a way to visually see the fuel level in the tank.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2* Years Later... I'm heading into my third season of using the Z235, and my opinion has not changed; 5 stars. I have had no problems with my equipment after the first 58 hours of use. It still runs, cuts, and looks great. After the first year, the cut quality deteriorated significantly. If you experience the same issue, you'll likely need to adjust the mowing deck. I suspect the cables stretch more during the first year of use, so the deck may not need adjusting as often going forward. Comprehensive instructions to adjust the deck are in the Owner's Manual. Also, my tires lost a lot of pressure after the first year, so you'll also want to keep tabs on the air pressure to maintain a nice cut. Do these two things, and change the oil/plugs/filters as specified, and you'll have a reliable machine for years to come (I hope).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from EZTrac's pros and cons After a year of enthusiastic learning, I have some observations, good and not so good. We changed blades and added an air dam to give us best leaf pickup characteristics, which it does well. Good first: once you develope some proficiency controlling the machine, it almost seems to anticipate your wishes and drive itself with the grace of a balerina. Almost. The cut on a scale from 1 to 10 is a 6 or 7 possibly due to the type of grass. It tends to lay down more than I would like. Not so good next: the cutting deck edge is inline with the rear wheel. If you cut close to a fence post the wheel will graze, some times hit the post. I have to leave a small uncut margin by such obstacles. I have to cut higher than with other mowers to avoid scalping off high places. If i turn too sharply the rear wheel on the inside scrubs off the grass leaving a bare spot. The front wheels caster and may to a lesser degree make a divot when they pivot. With time, I have learned to avoid scaring the lawn most of the time. Bottom line: I enjoy mowing with this equipment and recommend it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Tires to wide of a track for deck size. Rear tires extend out past deck .Not easy to cut close to curbing, flower beds, etc.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great mower with some minor issues I purchased this mower almost a year ago and wanted to really test it before writing a review. This is my first Zero Turn so it only took a few minutes to get use to it. The dealer gave me a crash course in the parking lot before I took it home. The very first cut looked like garbage. grass was uneven. The deck was misaligned. after making a minor adjustment it was fixed. I even put a set of mulching blades on it. Even better, perfect cut. Now for the oil changes. Drain tube is too short so you will make a mess. My advice, buy a heater hose or a long funnel to attach to the end. problem solved. You will also make a mess replacing the filter. just fold up a shop rag and slide it underneath. The machine does not like to start up in colder weather. so if its below 40 deg outside, it will take a minute and sound like junk. once that oil warms up it will start to sound better. all in all, its a fun machine. cuts my time in half. My wife enjoys it more then I do. very easy to operate and she is a girly girl.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Rear Wheels too wide for deck The rear wheels are too wide for the 42" deck. One has great control with the Zero Turn, but if you trim around a rain gutter downspout watching the mower deck, you'll run over it with the rear tire. Also where we have cement edging around the landscaping, to get close the rear wheel is up on the cement, so that side cuts high. We love the zero turn and machine has plenty of power but everybody who drives it run over things with back tires.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Good, But A Few Issues Overall, this is a good machine. My last JD was built in 1988 and it is still a good mower, I now only use it to pull my lawn fertilizer attachment. The new Z235, is fast and fun to drive, but with a few issues: (1) the lack of a fuel gauge is a BIG BIG problem as when you add fuel, you cannot tell how full the tank is until it overflows. (2) The right mower deck spindle cannot be lubricated without dropping the deck at the front support and jacking up the frame. (3) The mower did not cut well when it was delivered. I checked the level myself, it was out by almost an inch, side to side. After adjusting it, it cuts very well. (4) You will have a difficult time draining the oil and replacing the filter without getting oil all over the place.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Z 235 ---- a speed demon! LOVE THIS MOWER! The zero turn cuts your mowing time in half. The engine is loud; so I suggest good ear protection and let her go!. The fuel tank is small and I really miss not having a gas guage. The first time you try the zero turn; it makes you think that you are drunker than a skunk, but in just a few minutes; you feel like you have been using the mower forever. We definitely are a John Deere family and proud of it.
