Customer Questions & Answers

Does this mower mow in reverse or do the blades disengage?

Asked by: Beanie
Yes it mows in reverse by moving the handles backward. I back into tight areas to mow corners.

What is the engine? Mfr?
Asked by: fran
Thank you for contacting the Home Depot website. The engine is a A 20-hp* (14.9-kW) V-twin engine that provides plenty of power and torque to handle tough mulching, mowing, and bagging conditions which is manufactured by John Deere. The V-twin cylinder is designed for greater torque, lower vibration, and improved sound quality.

Customer Reviews

Z235 42 in. 20 HP V-Twin Hydrostatic Zero-Turn Riding Mower - California Only is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 75.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2* Years Later... I'm heading into my third season of using the Z235, and my opinion has not changed; 5 stars. I have had no problems with my equipment after the first 58 hours of use. It still runs, cuts, and looks great. After the first year, the cut quality deteriorated significantly. If you experience the same issue, you'll likely need to adjust the mowing deck. I suspect the cables stretch more during the first year of use, so the deck may not need adjusting as often going forward. Comprehensive instructions to adjust the deck are in the Owner's Manual. Also, my tires lost a lot of pressure after the first year, so you'll also want to keep tabs on the air pressure to maintain a nice cut. Do these two things, and change the oil/plugs/filters as specified, and you'll have a reliable machine for years to come (I hope).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Rear Wheels too wide for deck The rear wheels are too wide for the 42" deck. One has great control with the Zero Turn, but if you trim around a rain gutter downspout watching the mower deck, you'll run over it with the rear tire. Also where we have cement edging around the landscaping, to get close the rear wheel is up on the cement, so that side cuts high. We love the zero turn and machine has plenty of power but everybody who drives it run over things with back tires.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not that great! This is a cheap entry level ztr. I have checked the deck for levelness and it still doesn't cut correctly. There always seems to be strips of grass popping up right where the tires went over it. No matter what speed you go. I took it to the dealer and they laughed and told me to buy a better bigger mower. After they checked over the deck and replaced one of the steering controller shocks (under warranty) they said they made a minor adjustment to the deck to level it and it cut just fine. I took it home and same thing, disappointment! This year i tried gator blades by Oregon on it but same issue! Now after 165 hours multiple blade sharpening and deck cleaning and new spindle bearings. Still the same results. Now the frame is cracking at the footrest on both sides and on both sides of the rear engine guard. I'm very disappointed! I wish i would have spent my money elsewhere! Bad cut! Junk spindle bearings@less than 100 hours, 4 cracks in guards and frame

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great mower with some minor issues I purchased this mower almost a year ago and wanted to really test it before writing a review. This is my first Zero Turn so it only took a few minutes to get use to it. The dealer gave me a crash course in the parking lot before I took it home. The very first cut looked like garbage. grass was uneven. The deck was misaligned. after making a minor adjustment it was fixed. I even put a set of mulching blades on it. Even better, perfect cut. Now for the oil changes. Drain tube is too short so you will make a mess. My advice, buy a heater hose or a long funnel to attach to the end. problem solved. You will also make a mess replacing the filter. just fold up a shop rag and slide it underneath. The machine does not like to start up in colder weather. so if its below 40 deg outside, it will take a minute and sound like junk. once that oil warms up it will start to sound better. all in all, its a fun machine. cuts my time in half. My wife enjoys it more then I do. very easy to operate and she is a girly girl.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic My yard is hilly, so we went with the 42" to get a good even cut. Mower is awesome and works well on hills as long as its dry...get a little spin when it's anything more than damp. Even though my old mower was the same deck size, I was still able to cut mow time down from 2 hours to 1.25, and the cut is much better. The only thing I wish it had was a bigger difference between the deck width and rear track width so that I could get closer to the grass edge without running over my rock edging with the rear wheels. The 48" would have gotten me there probably, but then I fear it's getting a little too wide for the hills. Overall, a great mower that cuts good, fast, and easy to use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Update/Retraction i didn't see a way to reply or update my previous review so I had to create a new name, but I want to retract my statements made on May 2nd (MJSquared). After talking to a friend and showing him how poor of a cut this mower made, he asked if I had set it up. I had not touched the setup, assuming the dealer had done all that before they delivered it. We looked in the owner’s manual to see how to set it up, but he told me about an easier way using a 2x4 piece of wood. I parked the mower on the drive way and checked the deck. It was not adjusted right at all, one side was almost an inch lower than the other! Now that I have it adjusted correctly, it is mowing great! It’s a night and day difference, almost like a completely different mower. So my previous negative review should have been for the DEALER, not the mower itself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great value This mower does not have all the featrues that a commercial mower has but it does not cost $4000 up, it does have all the features you need to cut in 1/2 the time a 42" lawn tractor does and it does a better job and cuts weedeating time as well. You can't tell how moch gas is in it but I fill it before each use and cut 2 achers and havent run out of gas yet. The oil filter is located in an area that makes it impossabele to change with out getting oil on the frame.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Little Mower for my 1.2 Acres This is an awesome mower, Cuts great, Turns on a dime, and has ample power. It'll do my entire 1.2 acres about twice on a tank of fuel. Very stable and capable of mowing up and down inclines with no tipping issues.
