That is normal function for this type of level. There are two vials in each measuring window so you can place the level on either side. Many levels just use a single, strait vial. This uses two slightly curved vials because you get a little better accuracy with this type. So, when you lay the level on a surface, you want to pay attention to the vial that curves downward, which would be the one on the bottom. If you completely flip the level over, you'll notice the other vial will now be used to get your reading. Read Less

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Bamboo level So far it's been a great level for the money. The bubles are tight and accurate. Used it many times already with no complaints. I would buy it again. September 10, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad level The level isn't flat so it is hard to get an accurate read. July 19, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by My towel bar is crooked.... After a couple days of using my towel bar, it seemed slightly off to me. Long story short, I found that this level was not straight, it was bowed! When I put the level on my counter top, the bubble showed as level; however there was daylight showing between the counter top and the level near the middle. When I was marking my level line for the towel bar, I didn't need all 48" of the level, so I used one end and then ended up somewhere in the middle of the level. I was only looking for the bubble to mark my line... Everything else about the level seemed fine, however if you are purchasing a level, you probably will only care about it being level, plumb, and STRAIGHT! If not, well then you'll probably not notice your crooked towel bar. March 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful, sturdy level I love that this is made from bamboo, a great renewable resource. Being wood, it's heavier than my old plastic one, but it's a nice finish and very strong. September 3, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not Level This level wasn't. I placed it on a table and carefully leveled it exactly, then I checked it for accuracy against three separate levels I already owned. All three previously purchased levels had consistent readings, but non agreed with this level. I returned it. January 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by 4' Johnson Level Was looking for the mahogany Johnson level, HD didn't stock them. Had to settle for the bamboo. Not a bad level for the money. Aluminum edges has a few small dings, not Johnson's fault, most likely from being handled n the store by people who haven't got a clue about tools. Overall, yes, a decent "entry" level.... Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice level for DIYers This level is aesthetically perfect. I found the compact design for a four foot level was great. It is replacing a wood 4 footer I have owed for 30 years that is 50 percent larger and much heavier. Well made with laminated bamboo. Johnson tools has priced it so that it is very affordable for a DIYer and professional framers/carpenters will love its durability. I especially like the fact that it is abrasive resistant with its metal edges so the finish is much better protected than the usual levels. I also like its lightweight factor...just a smidgen over 3 pounds which means less wear and tear on aging bodies like mine. The price is right at Home Depot.. December 9, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by As other said Not worth it in the long run. Got it as a birthday gift last year being I needed one at the time. Surprise, nice & thoughtful even though I was skeptical about it but it worked then. As I go to use it earlier today I can see that the frame work isnt level. So using another higher quality Starrett level, sure enough way off. Has to be the bubble jammies off. Held them side by side vertically level. Also has a slight bend to it so its good for a door holder now. Bamboo is really being pushed. Understand bamboo only worked well for Gilligans island, lol. Levels need to be precise and made with quality materials. You get what you pay for. April 13, 2014
