I already ordered a 12 foot track from Home Depot.

What is the width of the jamb needed to mount this 3-door track system? I'm assuming it will not fit on a standard 2x4 jamb, but not sure if a 2x6 will work or if I need to frame a 2x8.
Asked by: MM
Minimum jamb width using an 1-3/8 thick door with an inset valence and cased opening is 6-1/2". You will need to split the difference between both sides or pull it all to one side like I did but either way you will need to fab and install casing returns back to the wall if you have a 2x4 framed opening and you wish to install a triple by-pass system using 1-3/8" doors.

Where can I find good installation instruction?

Where can I find good installation instruction?
Asked by: Gus
There aren't really any good instructions out there because it is all in the dimensioning. What I did was lay out the top track assembly on a piece of graph paper. Bear in mind the drawing that comes with this product shows a type of layout for a valance only at the top. It does not show a cased opening with a valence inset into the jamb. If you want a cased opening then know the assembly is going to grow in width. It won't affect the overall jamb width in a double by-pass but it definitely affects the jamb width on a triple by-pass. With the valence detail that is inset into the jamb- width grows to 6-1/2". Standard jamb thickness on a 2x4 wall is 4-7/8" so clearly the jamb is deeper than the framed and rocked walls. For clearance purposes I was forced to pull the difference into the room and fabricate returns on the casing. It's a different jamb detail than any of the other doors in the house but it works fine. One last thing- Ditch the 1/32nd dimensions that are called out on the drawing and round up to the nearest 1/16th (it will make your life a whole lot easier). Take your time and draw it up first. It is all in the layout and ink is cheap. Tools Used: Laser/ Tripod 6' Level Tape Measure Mechanical Pencil Graph Paper Cabinet Maker's Square Screw/Drill Gun Drill Bits Router (to rabbit in the jamb header to the jamb legs but not required) String Line Counter Sink Bit Chop Saw Table Saw Headless Nailer Pin Nailer Brad Nailer Compressor & Hose Additional Material Required: Anchors For Track If Installing Into Concrete 2" Wood Screws to Assemble Jamb

My opening is 108" will 106" work?

My opening is 108" will 106" work?
Asked by: Smurff
You should have an opening that is at least 2 inches shorter than what your 3 doors add up to be. If the opening is not shorter, you will have gaps where your doors do not overlap each other to make a visual closed door system. You can make the 106" track work with the 108" opening, but you will need doors that are wider than 36" to have no gaps between the doors.

My wife and I really like how my 3-track closet doors turned out - like the looks and the ease of rolling doors across. Installing the upper and lower tracks were not needing to be that exact. I added another 1/16 of an inch in spacing them apart. And the upper rollers allow adjusting for height. I installed the lower track on a laminate floor. One note was that the bottom tracks were not predrilled for screwing them down to the floor. So I used a drill bit with a countersink for a number 6 screw in about 19-inch intervals. The upper track systems needs to be fairly level or the doors will tend to roll in the down direction.

The product could use a bit of re-engineering with regards to requiring "hard wood spacing" for the bottom track. For 1 3/8 inch doors, it requires 3/4" x 1 1/8" stock wood - this is NOT standard size wood. Bottom track could be made wider so the stock wood for spacing could be 3/4" x 1" which is standard size.

This is a well made product that is suitable for light commercial applications. It will last a lifetime in a residential setting. That said, this product is designed to be installed by someone that knows how to read a tape measure and has the ability to figure a few dimensions out on their own. The instructions are not really instructions as much as they are simply a dimensioned line drawing that depicts how the draftsperson saw the hardware being installed in a given jamb assembly. What is depicted is NOT the only way to install these tracks but it will be up to you to figure out other ways. Be aware the drawing calls for a few dimensions in 1/32nds (That's crazy! Just round up to the nearest 1/16th.) and there are a few dimensions that are missing that you'll have to figure out. The bottom tracks are simply an aluminum U channel and there are no holes pre-drilled in the bottom tracks so you'll have to drill and countersink those on your own. On a difficulty scale I would have to rate this assembly as difficult but manageable if you know how to self direct, you are not looking for instant gratification and above all else you take your time with the layout.
