Customer Questions & Answers

Does this run by battery or electric

Asked by: Valeria
It is electric and you will probably need an extension cord as the cord on the de-icer is fairly short. It works great!

I have a Little Giant 3.5 gallon Hen Hydrator, basically a plastic bucket with watering nipples on the bottom of the bucket. Will this birdbath de-iced work to keep the water thawed if I lay it on the bottom, or suspend it a couple of inches above the bottom of the bucket without damaging or melting the bucket?
Asked by: Lenny
Yes, I believe it will work for you, the actual unit is only about six inches long, but you will need an extension cord. I have the de-icer in a birdbath/fountain that is made of resin and have had no problems at all.

Asked by: betz

The picture is deceptive: the instructions say to keep the whole thing submerged in water. We have a very shallow birdbath, with a raised center like the one shown. There would be no way that the de-icer could be on the raised center and submerged at the same time, so we put it on one side. The de-icer melted the water, but mostly just on the side it was placed, but that was enough for the birds. I'm not sure the higher wattage one would melt around to the other side in such a wide, shallow birdbath. We refilled the birdbath regularly, concerned about keeping the de-icer under water, although I noticed in the product questions that one person claimed it would not burn out. There was one review complaining that there was no way not to have the plug in the water, but I have no clue why he said that, since the cord is several feet long. We've have a very mild winter, but so far, it's made the birds happy, and if they're happy, we're happy!

I have a small birdbath/fountain on my deck and have frequent visitors in the spring and summer. This year we are in a drought here in the middle of the country, so I wanted a way to keep my birdbath out during the winter season. I found the K & H birdbath de-icer on another site, so checked Home Depot. The price is cheaper at HD and the shipping to home ws free and fast. The de-icer is about 6-7 inches long and fits great in my fountain. It is paintable if that is an option you need. You will need an extension cord as the de-icer cord is pretty short. We have had several days below freezing and are looking at single digits in the next couple of days. There has been absolutely no ice in the birdbath, and the fountain still flows freely. We have had robins, finches, large woodpeckers and even squirrels drinking at the fountain. The de-icer absolutely exceeded my expectations and I would definitely recommend it.

It did not. The company. did not take my email serious. I returned it to Home Depot for a refund. The 50m watt heater was . Defective, or Over rated on how it will keep the water ice free. I would accept the 80 watt heater, on a trial basic to see if it would do the job. Sam

This is a low wattage unit, but it did a great job in eastern Idaho where we have been below zero for a great many days. I would absolutely recommend this unit for a small bird bath. Ours is probably 18" in diameter, and very shallow. But based on these specs, it works as advertised, and I am very happy.

It did have a higher wattage so it kept most of the birdbath free of ice. This one does the job in a small area of our birdbath because of the lower wattage. It is a good product to keep some of the ice melted and maybe our electric bill will be lower.
