Can this be used on metal? What can I thin it with to use a "air paint gun"

Asked by: Kountry
Hi Kountry, The Kilz Adhesion can definitely be used on metal surfaces. You can also thin it with up to 8 oz. of water per gallon if you plan on spraying it. Good luck with your project! - Sara

Can I use this over shellac?

Asked by: Stephanie
I'm doing exactly that right now. I want to paint the ancient wood cabinets in my apartment kitchen. Wood that had been stained, and then had shellac applied, back in the 1970s. This product does work, but not 100% consistently. Sometimes, on some cabinets, it covers on the first coat. But sometimes, it beads up, and needs additional coats. On one particular cabinet, it needed 6 (!!) coats of primer to fully cover that surface. Not sure why . . . maybe extra shellac was on that particular cabinet?? I did buy a power sander, and that eliminated any question. That was $40 (plus $10 for extra sanding pads), and that made sanding a 1-hour process, instead of a 15-hour process. i.e., money *Well* spent. And the primer went on beautifully on any surface that had been sanded. So, aside from that one especially difficult cabinet, I thought this product worked very very well. And, of course, when it works on the first (or second) coat, it saves a ton of time in avoiding heavy-duty sanding, using paint stripper, etc. I'm quite pleased, and if I decide to do the same DIY project in my bathroom, I'll buy another gallon of this.

1-gal. Adhesion Bonding Primer is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 59.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing product! Before I tried Kilz Adhesion I tried the one primer all the "pros" told me to use and I will have "great success". Well after sanding, priming, wiping down and painting 5 of the 100 doors ( which were previously painted with oil based gloss). I gave the paint job 3 days to dry and gave it the thumbnail scratch test. Imagine my horror when paint and primer came off because the primer didn't stick! So I returned to my paint store and didn't ask any questions just to "Please shake one can of Kilz Adhesion primer." After following the directions as to applying the primer, I was so relieved that the primer stuck like... Just amazing, and the top coat looks fabulous on top of it! It is my "go-to" brand of primer for ceilings, walls, bathrooms, etc. I bought an old beach house with wood paneling throughout the entire place. I just wanted to brighten up this small space. I read reviews, tried sanding some walls, and tried some walls without sanding. I think we are finally getting somewhere, but it has taken 3 coats, and the brown is not gone, and I'm afraid to use a light color without the brown bleeding back through. See pictures. I like this product, but for $40 a gallon, I was hoping I would only need 2 coats at the MAX. At this rate, I'll need at least 4/5 gallons to get through 896 Sq. ft.

THE OIL BASED ENAMEL ADHERED TO IT SUPERBLY. THE KILZ ALSO ADHERED TO THE FIBERGLASS AS IT SAYS. THE BOTTOM LOOKED SO GOOD, I DECIDED TO USE IT ON THE SIDES. THIS IS A PICTURE OF THE BOAT WITH KILZ ADHESION PRIMER ON THE SIDES. I DID NOT SAVE PICTURE OF BOTTOM WITH PRIMER ON IT. I INCLUDED PICTURE OF FINISHED PRODUCT ALSO . I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT .

I did a lot of prep work and scuff sanded all the cabinets to make sure they primer stuck which was a lot of work. Problem was the tannen in the wood bled through and I had to re prime with shellac primer.

We have sanded, used TSP, used 2 coats of Kiltz, and then 2 coats of top quality of SW paint. When hanging the doors sometimes a scape can remove both paint and primer. So far, I'm not pleased!
