I haven't tried it. The only con may be the Home Depot tinting machine may not have this product in there list and have to manually input color leaving the dried color a little off. But as a base coat, that may not matter.

Just ask your Home Depot Paint person to add the colorant to match your paint swatch in a few shades lighter and throw it in the shaker to mix. If you have an electric drill with a mixing attachment or just a paint stick, make a recipe and pour out a measured amt of the Kilz from the can into a second larger container, adding a measured amt of your desired color of ACRYLIC (LATEX)PAINT. BTW That price for a Gallon is the lowest I've heard of!!

Recommended that you use this product BEFORE your paint. If you have a bleed through, then use Kilz on the stains and re-paint. Your problem should be solved.

Answer:
Some bleed through stains will come through no matter what if you try to just cover it. You have to find out what the stain material is, then neutralize it. If it is a grease type stain wash it down with a good detergent, such as Dawn first, then prime it. sometimes it takes a few coats to get it covered. Depends on the type of stain, and the size of it.

I had a water stain on my ceiling for many years that was very dark. I covered it with the kilz white and it worked wonderful. I painted on one coat and then for safety reasons, just to make sure, I painted another coat. It looks great.

It has covered all my stains in the past. I have always cleaned the area as directed though.
If you do not properly clean the surface it might eventually bleed through again, especially if you have already primed it and that didn't cover. I have found Kilz a very affective primer though.

Hello! KILZ 2 is designed for smaller decorative painting projects like interior and exterior color change. You want a product that is formulated to tackle tough stains. First, do you know the type of stain on the surface? There are two different types of stains: (1) oil-soluble stains such as kitchen grease, hand prints, tar or creosote and (2) water-soluble stains such as nicotine, smoke stains and tannin bleed. If you are unsure, we do have a revolutionary product that blocks both types called KILZ MAX. This heavy-duty stain blocker is a revolution to the primer category since it combats both stain types. You can find this product at your local Home Depot store. If you have any additional questions, please contact us directly at ask@kilz.com. Thanks! Read Less

I plan to use Kilz primer (Kilz2) as a sealer and top coat on a new sheet rock ceiling. Is it okay to do this, or do I need to recoat with another paint. I am using it on sheet rock that has been textured with sheet rock "mud" and also on existing walls that have satin or semi-gloss paint on them (can't remember which).

I don't think I would use it as the topcoat, it goes on pretty thin and coverage won't be good. It's pretty much a primer sealer and not designed for topcoat

Kilz is strictly used as a primer/sealer. It does not work as a topcoat. Make sure you paint all areas with Kilz, let dry, then paint your topcoat. Kilz dries quickly and easy to apply.

Kilz is a fantastic sealer (for water stains, etc) and primer. It is not a top coat and not a finished painted surface. For a proper finish you will need one or two coats of paint over the Kilz.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor quality. Terrible. Works only if applying one coat. Put on a second and it all peels off causing you to have to start over. Purchased this for touch ups with contractor grade paint from quality paint manufacturer. Was also patching some places which is why I wanted the primer. May 4, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy Primer This primer is smooth and easy to apply, dries nicely, laid down smooth. I took one fluke day in February when temperature neared 60 degrees F to prime up new wooden stairs in the garage. Died up well enough overnight to lightly sand and put two coats of final paint next day. Now that it's all finished, I don't mind coming home with wet shoes. March 1, 2016
