If the wallpaper is smooth - no texture - then it probably will work to hide the color & pattern before you paint. Keep in mind that seams will still show, along with any bubbles, rips, or tears in the paper. More so with a light or white colored paint. From experience in two homes with wallpaper that previous owners had painted over, I would not recommend doing it. The moisture from the wet paint can cause the paper to bubble. It will take the paint and primer longer to dry, too. Painting over it is easier than removal, of course, just wanted you to know some of the pitfalls first.

Answer:
When painting over wallpaper, it is better to use an oil base primer. The water base latex can cause the paper to lift.

I would not recommend that application. Yes, it would work however as it dries, it may create a bubbling of the paper underneath where the paper glue is not holding well. Answer:
you need to use an oil based primer, not a water based, to help keep the adhesive of the wall paper sealed from the moisture of latex (water based) paint. Otherwise you run the risk of moisture loosing the adhesive.

Hi JP this will work, however I prefer to use an oil based primer if it is permitted to use in your area. Both will seal the wood, I just like the protection oil base primers provide.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great prep step This product allowed me to transition old purple walls with new construction seamlessly. I highly recommend this product cause plain and simple it just works. June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Mandatory for most paint jobs You can never go wrong using this before you apply a topcoat. I know a lot of the paints come with primer included, but this Kilz does a much better job covering. Dries in 30 minutes, so you can get to the top coat fast September 13, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Too thin, doesn't cover well My kids drew on their bedroom walls with pen, marker, stamps. I painted over their drawings with this primer but their drawings show through. I have done 3 coats now, the last coat was applied very thick. I'll give it a bit more time to dry then will just keep painting it on until it isn't so dark. I'm sure I'll need a couple of coats of topcoat where I thought one would do. I won't buy this primer again. I'll post photos when I can. September 12, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by not what I expected It kind of pulled together as it dried leaving thin spots. i went over it again as I did the next section, only moments later, and it pulled the still wet coat back up and was almost impossible to make it blend. It looks great now but I had to use two coats. Maybe there is a something that I am doing wrong but I don't think that I have ever had paint do that to me before. September 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good buy easy to use good coverage easy to clean looks great good buy September 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Covers very well. It even looks good by itself without the cover coat. I used this primer to cover bare wood and weathered/scraped old surfaces where the bare wood now shows through. The primer covered really well. I almost didn't need to apply the final exterior white gloss paint. It significantly reduced the amount of the final finish coat that I needed to apply. So far, I am pleased with the product. Hopefully, it will hold up over the years. I don't mind paying extra for a high-quality paint that will reduce re-painting in the future. August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Purchase The product is effective for what I need it for, so I am pleased with what the product does for my home project. August 30, 2016
