Customer Questions & Answers

Will this help cover slight imperfections in sheetrock like small cracks?

Asked by: Frank
Paints and primers are not intended to cover cracks. If you do, the fix is usually only temporary. Over time, the cracks will reopen. It is always best to use spackle / drywall compound to fix cracks in sheetrock. It doesn't take much time and the fix is more permanent.

Although I have never used Kilz for that, I would certainly give it try. You might try checking with the manufacturer, specific to your question.

Not sure if this is truly okay to use for exterior primer

Although the title says Interior/exterior, the Product Overview only says "Use on interior surfaces". Is it okay to use on exterior entry doors?
Asked by: SDCaz
Wood or metal. I wouldn't use it on metal or plastic doors ... I don't think you will like the results. In those cases I would use an exterior primer from a can. You need to make sure that you work from about 16" away from the surface and will require multiple passes, but you will get better results. Wood ... it should work fine, but a nice stain and several poly coat would probably look better unless you want it to be smooth and not look like wood.

1-gal. White Water-Based Latex Interior/Exterior Multi-Surface Primer, Sealer and Stain-Blocker is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 522.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Idea Ever. So I've painted for years and hated every moment of it. The taping, the clean up, the 15 coats of paint to make the walls look clean and good. We'll now with this product, it has literally cut painting time in half. It goes on extremely clean, coats exceptionally well. It still only took 1 coat of this to cover a jet black media wall in my living room. After that 2 coats of Glidden and it's flawless and you'd never know it was black 2 hours prior. This stuff is insane. I will use Kilz 2 for any and every painting project in the future. I repainted about 1200 sqft of walls, including vaulted walls, and this saved me so much time. Fantastic product, great price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wowza! My husband and I just moved into an older trailer from the 60s. Horrible condition. The walls were extremely damaged and stained from nicotine, animal damages and the previous tenants had done a horrible job painting. It looked like they didn't use any primer and used a singular, very sloppy coat of eggshell finish paint. One coat of killz and one coat of flat light base paint is all it took to cover up most of the living room and hallways. I had to do some major repairs in the kitchen, peeled up old wallpaper and patched some big holes in the walls. Now smooth as a baby's butt! I heard killz was good stuff but I never would have thought it was THIS good. It is definitely on my "products to remember" list now! :D [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Kilz has always been my go-to for primer, but the first time I used the latex. Go for the enamel or oil version (might be the same). Used this to prime over wood paneling and needed 4 coats of primer and 2 of paint to stop the color leaching out of the paneling. Paint still peeled off down to the paneling afterward. Granted, I could have roughed up the paneling surface... but that's what Kilz is for!

I am painting the ceiling of a house built in the 50's. after scraping years of old paint to get to the old tounge & groove pine boards, and applying 2 coats of the kilz something is still bleeding through. maybe I should have used a primmer paint instead.
