Answer:
Hi bronx,
The number of coats required depends upon the color of the topcoat as well. You may have a successful project with one coat of primer if your new paint color is muted or is a medium tone. Two coats of primer will give you the best results if you are going from a deep, blood red to a bright white.
Good luck with your project!

Hello!
Thank you for your question!
To cover such a dark color, you may want to consider applying 2 coats, especially if you are planning on painting it a light color.
Have a great day!
Christine :-)

Hello Bwebber84,
We appreciate your question. Typically, the VOCs from the paint air out within 24 hours of being applied. As time goes on, less VOCs remain in the film of paint. If concerned for your children's safety/well-being from the newly applied paint, I can suggest bringing the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the exact product of interest to their doctor to get his or her input. Hope this helps. Read More

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product - great coverage - but heavy odor as expected Painted over ugly old wallpaper from 1960s in a rental apartment and it covered like a dream. Saved tons of time. Lived up to it reputation. Heavy odor for first day but then dissipates. Can only be expected due to oil based product. I would definitely use this product again and recommend to others August 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This product saved us thou$and$!! This past spring, we bought a house that has one inch thick white oak floors throughout. The old lady who lived here hadn't let her dogs outside for decades. With the humidity and heat of warm weather, the pet stains were seeping up like tar and the stench was unbearable. The floors were almost solid black! Neighbors could smell the house from the sidewalk. We used 2 coats of Kilz Original oil based primer to seal the wood floors before laying vinyl plank flooring over it. There's no odor evidence of the years of damage either! Replacing the wood floors would have cost thousands of dollars. I wish I could attach pictures so you could see the before and after! Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by WW2 VET in need, Killz to the rescue. I did a job for a great man named Charlie Zappo. He was a soldier in the battle of the bulge. Last year he had a little fire in his kitchen where his amazing wife cooked him breakfast lunch and dinner every single day. The smoke damage was horrible on his ceiling and the smell was absolutely horrendous to the point Mr. and Mrs. Zappo could no longer spend time together in their kitchen that they love so much. They called me as I am a friend of theirs and in the painting business. I immediately said oil based Killz. A day later I put two coats of oil-based Killz and let it dry all day, the next day I came back to finish the painting. Mrs. Zappo was in tears when she seen the final results and had her wonderful kitchen back. Mr. Zappo has since passed away a few months back and his wife still to this day tells me how amazing it is to have her kitchen back and all the memories they shared in it. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Helps get you through "empty nest syndrome"... We never expected our adult child to move back home, but when she left the second time, with her two cats, she left quite the mess. After ripping up the carpets, we discovered a whole world of stink! Since replacing the wood was out of our budget, I resorted to painting the base with Kilz before adding the new flooring, and the room has been smell free since! Easy to apply and completely blocked the odors. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] September 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Covering old wood paneling Our old home came complete with wood paneling and all the smells you would expect after enduring 36 years of chain-smoking. We wanted to preserve the charm without keeping the smell of dated smokey wood. Original Kilz primer was exactly what we needed. It not only hid the stench, but it also hid all the wood grain and knots in the pine paneling. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] September 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product We bought our house and the walls looked terrible. We textured the walls and used kilz primer on them before we painted. The primer was great. Only used one coat of paint on the walls and they turned out great thanks to your product. Love it. Will be using it when we paint the outside too. Thank you!
