Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be used as paint?

Asked by: Jen
Hello Jen, Thanks for your question. No, while this product is great for covering new and bare drywall, it is not a standalone product like a paint would be. In other words, it needs to be topcoated soon after being applied or else it can have a tendency to break down. We recommend using water-based paints that are in a flat, flat enamel, or eggshell finish. Well wishes! -Joshua

Can I use a semi gloss paint over this?

I read through all the questions and answers above, in one spot it says it can not be topcoat end with a semi gloss paint and in another spot it says it can be topcoats with any sheen. Which is correct? Can I use a semi gloss paint over this primer? Thanks in advance
Asked by: Painterm
Hello Painterm, Thanks for your question. No, this primer is only designed to take a topcoat of flat, matte, or eggshell. Any sheen higher than those is risking a peeling or bubbling issue. If needing to apply a semi-gloss, we can recommend a product like our Kilz 2 Latex primer instead, which can take any sheen. Please be sure to follow all label instructions for a successful project. Best wishes! -Joshua

How long should I let this Primer dry before I apply a paint coat?

Asked by: Roosh
Hello Roosh, We appreciate your question about our Kilz PVA primer. It will dry to the touch in about 30 minutes, and two hours would be needed before applying the topcoat of paint. Please be sure to follow all label instructions for a successful project. Best wishes! -Joshua

5-gal. PVA Primer is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 42.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from New drywall Works great and looks great without painting after use. It blends the tape joints where sparkle is used with the grey drywall. I would be be happy just using the primer without any further paint. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I just used this on new drywall yesterday; kitchen ceiling and soffits, and foyer wall. No fumes or mist coming off of paint roller. Goes on as a grey tint and dries relatively quickly within an hour. The results are very, very good. I was impressed and will use this again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I used this PVA Primer for the first time today on newly plastered walls that were finished 5 days ago. I've primed lots of fresh plaster over the years and I can say without a doubt that this is the best product I've ever used. It went on easily, coverage was great and as another reviewer stated, it looks like a finished coat of flat wall paint. In fact, my wife suggested that I just go with the primer and start installing the baseboard and trim. I will be adding a topcoat of flat wall paint but again, the PVA looks really good all on its own. PVA is my new go to primer. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must buy for covering new drywall In the process of refinishing our basement and a friend recommended I use this before the Behr goes on. It was pretty inexpensive so I went for it. I seriously could not be more pleased with the results. The paint went on easily and covered very well. It initially goes on gray which makes it easier to see any missed spots. It dries white, leaving you with the perfect base layer. Highly recommend this product, it seems like it let me use less of the color to go on top because it covered the drywall/mud so well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from for use on new drywall PVA primer is intended for use on new drywall to seal the porous surface before texturing. Some negative reviews here and under the 5-gal bucket seem to have tried to use it as a stain-hiding product or to cover up old paint. If that's what you are trying to do, then you need to spend the extra $$ and get kilz original or kilz2, or another stain blocking primer. Do a little research and spend a little more on the right product for the job, and you will save yourself some trouble.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Primer We bought this primer specifically for use on new drywall, which is the intended purpose of a PVA product. The paint evened out the wall textures between mud and paper on the first coat. Of course you can see some areas of lighter or heavier coverage from rolling (you really need to look hard) but this is a primer not the top coat. It's main purpose is to seal new drywall and provide a consistent texture, it does that well. The clean up of this product is amazing, all the paint came off our hands and drips came off clothes with a little soap and warm water. One other great thing where we applied a second coat; this primer goes on grey and dried to pure white. The greyness helps you see painted vs unpainted spots so you can get consistent coverage. Tools: 3in straight brush for cut in, quality 3/8 nap roller.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great basic primer Sprayed out a newly drywalled basement - about 2750 sq ft. Used airless sprayer with 0.15 tip. Did first half with Behr primer and second half with this Kilz primer. The Kilz was clearly a better covering product. Less odor, airborne mist, and dry paint dust on the floor than with the Behr. Sprayed well with no thinning. It recommended 0.17-0.21 tip size, but my 0.15 never clogged or hesitated. I would not hesitate to use this product again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly reccomend I have to say I was very happy with this product. We primed our basement with this primer utilizing an airless sprayer and a 515 spray tip. This product self levels like a dream! My husband isn't the greatest at catching drips and lets just say that he went back to touch up some spots on moldings 30 minutes after he had sprayed and just made a goopy mess in a few small areas with a brush. I wasn't looking forward to having to spend forever sanding down those problem areas. I was very surprised to come back the next day and see how well those areas had self leveled with this product requiring very little sanding. I would highly recommend, though be aware that the drywall tends to soak up this product. We ended up using 4- 5 gallon buckets for our 1500 s.f. basement.
