Customer Questions & Answers

Can this product be used in a laundry room where the water heater is situated?

Asked by: Maritza
Hello Maritza, Thanks for your question. Yes, it can be used in a laundry room near a water heater. Just please be sure it's not in direct contact with any warm or hot parts of the water heater as that can warp the coating. Please be sure to follow all label instructions. Best wishes for your project! -Joshua

Looks like somebody painted latex over oil now the paint is peeling off, can I apply this primer without sanding all the wood work

Asked by: Help1971
Hi Help1971, Thanks for writing in with your question. Although you don't have to completely sand the previous paints off, you will want to sand to remove the loose coating. Before priming the surface should be sound, clean and dry. Then you'll be able to topcoat. Good luck with your project! Regards, Giovanna

How many sqft does the 5 gal cover?

We are going to be using it to seal our floors before putting down new carpet
Asked by: paintingmyhouse
Hello paintingmyhouse, Thanks for your question on our Kilz Max primer. It's a great product for subfloors when you're going to be laying carpet over it. The 5-gallon can will cover 1500-1750 square feet per gallon. This would be for each coat. For best results, please follow all label instructions. Well wishes! -Joshua

sealing knots, also cedar odor

Will this seal the bleed-through from knots in wood? Also, I have an old cedar closet that gives my clothes a urine-like smell I don't like. I don't want to sand it to "freshen" the cedar because I don't want my clothes to smell like cedar. I'd rather just seal off the odor and have been told the only way to do this with cedar is to use shellac. Will this stuff seal in the odor?
Asked by: lenny
Hello lenny, Thanks for your question. Our Kilz Max primer will seal the bleeding of tannins from the knots in wood, and it is great for sealing odors like those from urine or smoke. Please be sure to follow all label instructions for best results. Well wishes! -Joshua

Customer Reviews

MAX Clear 5-gal. Water-Based Interior Primer, Sealer and Stainblocker is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kilz saved us a new floor Because of artistically placed furniture during our showing of this home we didn't see all of the nasty stains on the carpet until after the previous owner had moved. We had the carpets cleaned but realized too late that the stains and smell would not be resolved just with cleaning. We tore out the old carpet, but wouldn't you know it - the sub-floor had been fouled as well. Yuck. The carpet guys insisted that we would need to tear out the whole floor and install fresh wood, but we chose Kilz instead and blocked the odor completely with Kilz Max - which saved us the work and expense of replacing the floor. Yeah for Kilz! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from kilz protected my castle project I used kilz clear to coat a castle cutout that I made for my daughter. At first I applied the first coat a little too thick and it caused some noticeable runs. Once I went thinner on the first coat it came out smooth. Castle looks nice, glossy and professional and it's now protected for outdoor use. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Done to the MAX Have used numerous KILZ products in my renovation business over the years but my favorite and most used is MAX. I could rant and rave for two or three pages but the bottom line is these products deliver and I have yet to find anything as robust and user friendly. If it makes my life easier them I'm on board. Thanks Kilz for being on my team. Regards, Don.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect primer I use kills primer every time I repaint the interior of my home. It has great coverage and works great as a base for all colors and brands. Highly recommended

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tried Max hoping for the same results of Original I'm in the middle of a whole house renovation (water damage that wasn't addressed for several years) and starting out using and liking Kilz Original. While the results of Kilz Original were everything I was hoping for, when Max came out, I tried one gallon because I'm not an oil based fan (hate going to work with paint spots and don't like using harsh chemicals to remove them)...the results were just as great but not having to "deal" with the extra work/mess of oil based sealer turned me into a Kilz Max fan. To me, the extra cost of Max is worth it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product but.... It is a great product and very easy to use. I was a little disappointed that it was not completely clear. There is a shadow to it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DOES NOT WORK OR AHEAR TO SEMI GLOSS this product kilz maxc does not work on semi gloss paint that was sanded cleaned and all done correctly the product seemed to grip on the correctly prepped area but after a 24 hour dry time on the primer sealer then a coat of semi gloss and dry time of 24 hours the paint and primer in 80% of the area can be pealed off in strips on flat paint so far it looks ok I would never use this product again on a semi gloss redo.
