Answer:
You would use it before the polyurethane. Lightly scuff sand the Kilz Max Clear before applying the polyurethane unless you apply within 24 hours after Kilz Max was applied.

I am going to change the color of my brushed nickel shower to an oil rubbed bronze. I am using rust-oleum painters touch ultra cover. It's suppose to have a primer in it, but it suggests using an oil base primer first. All the oil base primers come in colors and I'm afraid that will mess with the color outcome. The shower is new, no rust. Will your water base to the same thing as the oil base because I really want clear.

Answer:
Because the Kilz Max is a water based product, the molecules are larger than the oil based products. That is why an oil based primer would be recommended, because it would have a beeter chance of sticking to the machined metal used on shower enclosures.

Hi JO, thank you for your question. Although KILZ MAX Clear is designed to perform like an oil-base or a shellac, it is still formulated as a water-based primer. If you intend to use a paint that recommends the use of an oil base primer. We advise you to follow the recommendation, to prevent any issue with the topcoat results. Using a white primer will not significantly alter the topcoat color. Unless, you're painting from a very light and to a very dark rich color, this means the white primer may "lighten" the appearance of your dark rich color. In those cases, using a gray primer is better. However, going from brushed nickel to bronze, a white primer is ok to use. If you wish, you can even have the white primer tinted at the store, to better match the color of the bronze topcoat paint. That could help get a "truer" color result. We recommend KILZ Complete white oil-base primer. The oil-based primer is used on interior/exterior surfaces. It has a harder, more durable, primer film and has mildewcides in it. This prevents mildew growth in a wet environment, such as a bathroom shower. Also, check if your intended topcoat paint is recommended for "wet application." Be sure to follow all back label instructions and best of luck on your project. Read Less

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great product but.... It is a great product and very easy to use. I was a little disappointed that it was not completely clear. There is a shadow to it. March 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Kilz saved us a new floor Because of artistically placed furniture during our showing of this home we didn't see all of the nasty stains on the carpet until after the previous owner had moved. We had the carpets cleaned but realized too late that the stains and smell would not be resolved just with cleaning. We tore out the old carpet, but wouldn't you know it - the sub-floor had been fouled as well. Yuck. The carpet guys insisted that we would need to tear out the whole floor and install fresh wood, but we chose Kilz instead and blocked the odor completely with Kilz Max - which saved us the work and expense of replacing the floor. Yeah for Kilz! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] October 20, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Tried Max hoping for the same results of Original I'm in the middle of a whole house renovation (water damage that wasn't addressed for several years) and starting out using and liking Kilz Original. While the results of Kilz Original were everything I was hoping for, when Max came out, I tried one gallon because I'm not an oil based fan (hate going to work with paint spots and don't like using harsh chemicals to remove them)...the results were just as great but not having to "deal" with the extra work/mess of oil based sealer turned me into a Kilz Max fan. To me, the extra cost of Max is worth it! March 20, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by DOES NOT WORK OR AHEAR TO SEMI GLOSS this product kilz maxc does not work on semi gloss paint that was sanded cleaned and all done correctly the product seemed to grip on the correctly prepped area but after a 24 hour dry time on the primer sealer then a coat of semi gloss and dry time of 24 hours the paint and primer in 80% of the area can be pealed off in strips on flat paint so far it looks ok I would never use this product again on a semi gloss redo. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Done to the MAX Have used numerous KILZ products in my renovation business over the years but my favorite and most used is MAX. I could rant and rave for two or three pages but the bottom line is these products deliver and I have yet to find anything as robust and user friendly. If it makes my life easier them I'm on board. Thanks Kilz for being on my team. Regards, Don. February 18, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect primer I use kills primer every time I repaint the interior of my home. It has great coverage and works great as a base for all colors and brands. Highly recommended February 19, 2014
