Answer:
Oil based primers resist shrinkage over time. Latex is best using for quicker drying time. yes you can put an oil based primer on, but you need to prime it first. And I highly recommend sanding the oil down for better adhesion/durability

Hi help,
Kilz works very well, however you may need two coats of paint
if you are going to a very light color.
Try the Kilz and one coat of paint and see how it goes.
You can always apply a second coat of paint if necessary.

Oil or Water Based

I recently purchased a house from a lady who had two cats and also smoked. Do I go with an oil-based or water-based primer on the drywall? What about the trim? The cats urinated in lots of places, so I'm not sure if it makes sense to do parts of the concrete floor (already ripped out the carpet and old hardwoods).

I know that the primer on this page is oil based. That was not my question. I noticed HD sells an oil-based Killz and a white water-based version. I was seeking clarification on which I should use given my situation.

Hi mountainwoman,
One gallon of Kilz Original Oil-Based Interior Primer, Sealer and Stain-Blocker has a coverage area of 300-400 square feet depending on surface type. For example, a smooth surface will fall more on the high end of coverage, where a rough surface may fall closer to the low end of the range.
Hope this helps. Good luck with your project!

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 237 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Buy more than the label says The oil-based product covers better than the latex, worth the extra hassle of cleanup. Biggest reason for the low "value" rating is that the coverage was not even close to what was shown on the can. Ended up buying almost twice as much to get the job done. April 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good stuff. Always good to have a product to go to that you know does a good job. Have always been happy with Killz products. Covers up nice and goes on easy. May 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Primed kitchen Our old house had very damaged kitchen walls with numerous layers of old paint/wallpaper. After extensive scraping and sanding etc to prepare the wall surface witch probably would have been easier to just put up new Sheetrock - we used the kilz primer to block out the old stains and it did exactly what we needed done - it worked great. My only disappointment is that we inadvertently bought the oil based which requires mineral sports for cleanup - which is very messy trying to clean up the rollers and paint tray. Ended up just having to throw them out. Will use the product again but would recommend the water based over the oil. March 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very effective primer paint We are upgrading our kitchen, including refinishing the wall cabinets. They had a dark walnut finish, over 50 years old. Latex based primers weren't effective for painting over the dark finish. We found that this oil-based primer did the best job of covering over and sealing in preparation for a semi-gloss, "Polar Bear" top coat. Kilz is also very effective in covering and sealing stains on the shelves. We are very happy with the results, and the kitchen is so much brighter now. March 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Oil Based Interior Primer I had to paint over stained doors and trim. This product work well and created a great seal over the stain which I was able to paint over easily. March 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by KILZ review This is a great product, easy to use, can't do without it! February 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by did a good job Used this to seal the drywall in a bathroom after I stripped off the wallpaper and realized the walls had never been painted. Bought this based on the recommendation of the Home Depot paint dept employee. It went on well, and seems to have set up a very good base for the finish coat of latex paint. I was warned that the fumes were bad, and indeed they were. Be prepared to use this in a well-ventilated area, and for it to take several hours for the smell to diminish. December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Purchase Ever Love it. Low odor. Best kill to use. No dripping or back splash. Kills smoke odor really well February 8, 2015
