Customer Questions & Answers

can this product cover up mold and mildowe

Asked by: Rick
I am late in the game to throw in my viewpoint but for future readers I will! Bleach DOES NOT kill mold and mold spores on ANY porous surface! If the area is more than 6-8 inches, you need to consult with a mold remediation company! Trust me! I have been deathly ill from toxic mold illness. With bleach, you will wipe off the head of the mold but the roots will still be in the material. Then - you just set the stage for the mold to double down and come back - usually more than what it was before. You must do some research and make sure you use a product that will kill not only the top but the root too. Usually this involves spraying the visible mold on top - wiping or scraping at the recommended time period - and then going back again and spraying more to kill the roots and finally recleaning. Then after 48 hours, use Kilz2, etc. to complete. Always drape plastic or seal off the area you are working on, turn off your air/furnace, and wear a respirator or at least a hepa mask! Throw away everything you contaminated and try not to recontaminate any areas. Depending on how much mold you found - the spores may be all over your home.

I used Kilz original primer on walls in an empty house 5 months ago, will not be able to apply top coat for another couple of weeks. The house temp during this time was in 50-60 F degrees; the primer has not yellowed or showed any signs of 'breaking down' I plan on using Behr self priming paint, 2 coats...will this be OK?
Asked by: Emily
YES. the primer seals the walls. As long as it dried 24 hours, it can be re-painted.

Can I use this to prep my garage walls for painting?
Asked by: vg
Hi vg, Thank you for your question! Yes, this primer can be applied to your garage walls. If your garage gets exposed to more dramatic temperature changes throughout the year though, you may want to consider using an exterior primer instead, like our Kilz Complete (http://www.homedepot.com/p/KILZ-1-gal-White-Oil-Based-Interior-Exterior-Primer-Sealer-and-Stain-Blocker-L101301/202259195). Best wishes for your project! - Sara

ORIGINAL 1-gal. White Oil-Based Interior Primer, Sealer and Stain-Blocker is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 435.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from solved our odor problem We bought a home in central florida and right after we moved in we discovered odor of cat urine. We spent hundreds of dollars and time to remediate this odor, assuming it was from pets on the floor. We removed flooring and treated the floor multiple times to no avail. We were frustrated and thought we made a terrible mistake. We then discovered that it was not the floor at all. It was the paint on the walls. We went out immediately and bought Kilz original and painted the accent walls that were suspect. We couldn't be happier with the results and the smell of clean air. The Kilz sealed the odor completely. Thank you.

This stuff is a 'miracle' to instantly update an old wall-papered room (without removing, in good solid condition); just seal, new-texture, and paint! Also a miracle for 'rehabilitating' a once stinky ex-smokers home into clean fresh-as-new condition; just prime, and re-paint. Drys FAST, so you can prime and top-coat the same day. Just use plenty of ventilation!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good save for a floor My mother always used Kilz on her rental homes to help prepare them for new renters. We just recently had to use it for our basement floor, it is awesome for pet odors. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

We are renovating a foreclosed home that had water spots on the ceiling (from a leaking hot-water heater in the attic). So we needed both the stain-covering and odor-blocking features of this product. The product spreads smoothly, performed as advertised, and is relatively inexpensive. I have 2 cavats: • This OIL-based version requires turpentine, mineral spirits, or chemicals for cleanup. KILZ makes a latex primer that cleans up easily with soap and water. • The OIL-based version has a much stronger scent that the latex version. Be sure to use a good face-mask and have proper ventilation!

For previously unpainted textured ceilings, applying Kilz Oil-Based Interior Primer, Sealer is imperative. Any water based paint will draw off the "popcorn" texture on the ceiling. It may come off in bits and pieces, but it will come off onto your roller. Kilz original oil base has no "draw" and will seal the texture to the ceiling. The only negative is that the odor is very strong and you must be able to ventilate the area...open a window. Keep in mind that if you apply a couple of coats to a white ceiling, you may be tempted to skip a color/finish coat. It's not a good idea as the Kilz has minimal pigment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Something old is new again! My father passed away last year, and left me his home; a single wide trailer on 11 acres. The land was beautiful. The trailer was old and unkept. Rotted floors, thirty years of tar and nicotine coated every surface. It took 3 of us about 4 months to clean and renovate that sad little trailer. 15 gallons of Kilz later, it looks and smells better than new. New cabinets and floors make a difference, that's for certain. But Kilz gave us a fresh blank slate to start anew. This was my first experience with Kilz and I'm a believer. I have the before and after pictures to prove that with Kilz, anything is possible! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
