Questions & Answers

What is the difference between a service rated 200a transfer switch and one that is not service rated?

Asked by: hotnova
RXT-JFNC-0200A, the question is not about the 200A LOAD rating we agree on that WHAT IS 200A VS. 200ASE The RXT-JFNC-200A is not service entrance rated. The RXT-JFNC-0200ASE TRANSFER SWITCH IS SERVICE ENTRANCE RATED! The difference: power comes into the transfer switch by way of utility or generator then it goes to the whole house circuit panel which has a 200a main circuit breaker. Lets make a short circuit on the entrance cable using utility power. The entrance cable comes out of the transfer switch and is feeding a short circuit before the main panel, the utility power is capable of 1000+ amps there is a circuit breaker in the 200ASE SWITCH THAT WILL DISCONNECT THE UTILITY WHILE THE 200A SWITCH IS TOAST! The 200A circuit breaker in the main panel never saw the short circuit because it happened before it got to the panel breaker.

how do you determine voltage and wattage needs?

Asked by: alfie
Look at your electric bill and find out how many KW hours you use every month. Divide that amount by the number of days in that month and then by 24 hours in a day. Keep in mind the worst case of useage is drying clothes and cooking. Keep in mind a well pump and the critical items you have to operate. furnace, refridgerators, well pumps, ligthing. You can reduce the size of the unit required by eliminating noncritical items during the outage times, like not using the oven or dryer.

Does this Kohler Generator run on Natural Gas?

I went to the Kohler web page and it says "This v-twin cylinder, air-cooled, horizontal-shaft engine is built to last. OHV, cast iron cylinder liners, and aluminum block construction make the 4-cycle, gasoline-powered Command PRO® ready for the long haul." I read the specs completley several times and the words Natural Gas is never mentioned. I can't believe that this engine doesn't run on Natural Gas. Since it says in your write up it is non returnable I don't want to purchase it and find out it doesn't run on Natural Gas.
Asked by: 13088seller
According to Consumer Reports, this generator (Kohler 8.5 RES-QS7) runs on propane OR natural gas.

i wil be using this unit in an off grid application. my system is 2 wire autostart capable. do i still need the transfer switch?

Asked by: john
I would say not as the transfer switch is to prevent back feeding power to the main grid. As you have no grid to backfeed you would not need the switch. I am not an electrician ( that was my fathers trade) but I do know something about gen set's. If you have an electrical inspector in your area he could give you A diffinative answer.
