I hired an electrician to install the generator due to permit and inspection requirements. He chose to install with 100 amp service, which added some cost and time to doing the work, due to large wire size. Overall the installation was straight forward and everything went fine. I already had a breaker panel set up for a generator, so did not use Square D buss in transfer switch cabinet. Unit started immediately (Nat Gas) on the first try, and we gave it three more tries by manually killing the power company feed, and each time the unit started and transferred the load successfully. First outage will be the next test.

Rated 1 out of 5Â by Chuck WARNING! Installation w/ permits is three times generator cost!
WARNING, Kohler requires a Kohler-certified installer to activate warranty.
The Install price bid for the $2500 (on-sale) generator was over $8000. This is with us digging the trenches for natural gas and electrical and constructing the pad. So... approximately $9000 to install.
City permit fees alone were $1600.
AND -- Home Depot would not take it back -- I even offered to pay shipping and a 15% restocking fee!
Kohler, USA was of no help affecting a return either. I am willing to pay some for my lack of diligence, but this seems above and beyond.
The total project cost became so great-- and our return options non-existent -- that we sold this new-in-box generator on Craigslist for pennies on the dollar.
So... do your homework, get an install bid w/ permit fees prior & expect to have no recourse on returns.
We are long-term Home Depot Pro Rewards customers.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by irori Not the cheapest but probably the best overall system
The system is just as promised in the literature. It is more than a temporary solution to emergency power: it is designed to be installed permanently. The transfer switch is a real bonus and not always part of a generator package. Installation is possible as a DIY project but it may be wise to call in an electrician for the connection of the transfer switch to the home electrical panel. The system ran perfectly on the first try and the automatic test feature will do weekly runs to ensure that it is ready when needed. The only missing feature is some sort of remote monitor/start control so that the status can be checked without going outside. Kohler makes a "ACD remote" but they are difficult to locate.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by Jack30 wonderful to do business with.
Easy to deal with. Generater arrived right on time with no problems. Excellent price and beautiful generator. Quiet, appealing to look at, all the upgrades for hassle free operation. Operates 3.5 ton AC, washer dryer, microwave, all the lights and tv's, two referegerators and a 22 cu ft freezer, and with all that going its running at only about 25 to 30 amps.
Seriously consider dealing with Home Depot online! Its my first time and I am very happy.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by Bruce Kohler Generator KW 14RESAL Installed
Home Depot Customer Service Representative was very helpful on the phone during ordering process. Clearly explained the features and benefits of this unit. Suggested the addition of the carburetor heater unit for northern Michigan use. Ordered on 4/10 and delivered 4/15/ - way ahead of schedule. Local electrician and local plumber installed the unit without incident and unit functioned correctly during the first attempt to start. Total cost including local installation was much less than quoted by a 'local' distributor for alternative product from another manufacturer. Using Natural Gas the unit is on automatic weekly sequence to start, check systems, and shut down. Noise/sound is relatively quiet for our residential neighborhood. I could not hear it half a block away. Only issue is lack of screening for insects, wasps, rodents that may want to live inside the containment unit. Value will be determined the first time we have to rely on the unit for back-up electricity for any time. The installation and purchase of the equipment is considerably less than anticipated.
