Inside the canister is a tube with a plastic cap that has a tube for the water refill. The plastic cap broke in half and I want to know if I have to purchase the whole kit or if I can purchase just the part I need?

According to what I read on line and the way the product is put together it is IMO the best choice. When I examined the entire assembly I was happy I bought the entire unit.

How do I get refill hose to the top of the canister from coming loose?

The refill hose keeps popping out of the top of the canister. There is no clip or other device to hold it in place. As such the bowl will not fill up if the hose is out. I keep reinserting it but it keeps popping out.

A friend was having this problem. After much research, It appears as though Kohler has redesigned the part such that it has a nipple onto which you attach the hose end--same as on the fill valve hose end--instead of the hole you stick it into, which fits too loose, causing it to pop out--your problem.

It is the "stem" that the flush canister wraps around, and is the overflow/bowl fill access. Easily removed: unhook chain and remove canister. grasp stem/part firmly and twist counterclockwise. it will unlock and lift out. replacement is the reverse.

IF this is the piece the hose attaches to that is coming away from the canister assembly, then you need a new assemble either way. that piece is not sold separately and I found no long term fix without replacement.

how to detect where toilet is leaking

This is a follow up to my earlier question. I filled the tank with a bucket of water and the tank holds the water with no obvious leaks at the canister seal or really anywhere since the water tank holds water. Does this mean there is a problem at the fill valve instead of a leaky canister assembly? Before I added the bucket of water I could see water swirling at the base of the fill valve and water did not rise more than 1 inch.

Repair to which part is most likely needed?

Turn off water line, mark the water tank with a pencil and wait for overnight. If water lost means you have a leak at the canister. Most likely the canister seal valve. If it is still leak then replace the complete canister set.

assuming you mean you have to replace a rubber gasket, and that gasket is on the bottom of the canister, you can replace just that one piece separately. If you mean any other gasket on the assembly, you will need to purchase and replace the entire assembly.

Canister Valve Assembly Kit is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Koehler flush valve Fairly easy to install only. The instructions were adequate. The problem was that the original installer - this is a replacement - had seriously over-tightened the unit, so removing the broken one was a real problem. Now it all functi0ns prefecrtly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Major hassle to install The only thing I really needed was the gasket that seals after flush. My gaskets were sticking to the lower portion of this assembly, making it very difficult to flush and eventually on one of the three toilets the gasket did stick to the bottom half, and therefore the toilet tank was not sealed off from the toilet. The gasket did not seem to be sold separately to seal off the two parts of this assembly, and this canister valve assembly required I remove the tank of the toilet to install. Getting the old canister valve assembly unscrewed was almost impossible and very time consuming. If at all possible, I recommend just trying to replace the gasket only, if you can find one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Canister valve assembly kit I have changed out valves and flaps in toilets for over thirty years and this product takes the cake for being the most difficult to work with! First, this toilet requires removal of the fill tank, which is a pain. Next, the old canister is extremely difficult to remove. I had to go back to Home Depot and an employee worked with me to come up with a way to remove the old assembly. We had to cut with a saw and then break off pieces of the old assembly to remove it. Once home, I installed the new unit but had to deal with leaks once the fill tank was reinstalled. Whoever designed this unit did not plan on replacing the canister valve in my estimation. A complete thumbs down!!!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just Fine...Except No problem with the piece.... once I got it. It is NOT in stock at any Home Depot in our area. They sell this Kohler toilet but DO NOT stock repair parts in the stores. You must order it on line and wait a week to get it. (sure hpoe you another toilet to use while you wait) I do NOT recommend these Kohler Aqua Piston toilets. The tank does NOT accept standard off the shelf repair parts. Kohler designed a new mechanism to solve a non-existent water saving problem and it is completely proprietary.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Why Did Kohler ruin a perfectly good design? Why would Kohler ruin a perfectly good design? The a aqua flush is a terrible design and would not recommend anyone buy a toilet with it installed. The canister does not last very long, just out of warrantee it broke and you have to wait a week to receive. To have to take off the tank to repair is just ridiculous , thumbs down to Kohler for this blunder! Hope you have a second toilet to use in your house if you purchase a Kohler toilet that uses this valve!
Date published: 2015-12-01
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Kohler installation information is lacking Kohler uses proprietary parts making acquiring replacement parts very frustrating. The videos that average people put up on YouTube are much more helpful than anything Kohler provides.
