Customer Questions & Answers

It Says "Tile In", can I use it with granite?

I know the sink says Tile-In, but can I use it with granite if I am buying a new countertop to install over it? I know that is probably a dumb question, but thanks.
Asked by: bdd007
I for one feel there are lots of dumb questions on this site, but this certainly isn't one of them. Here's the deal. A tile-in sink and an undermount sink look a bit similar. An undermount sink is designed to be installed UNDER the counter, specifically, there is a small flat flange running around the sink that is designed to be glued and otherwise secured to the bottom of the counter. There is nothing ABOVE the counter. A tile-in sink installs OVER the counter (just like a topmount sink, aka a "drop-in," aka a "self-rimming" sink). But whereas a topmount has a large, bold, visually appealing rim running around the edge of the sink, a tile-in sink has a small, usually tapered flange running around it. You are supposed to be able to run tile over it all the way up to the edge of the sink (aka "tile it in"). When you look in the sink hole, then, with a tile-in sink, you see a thin layer where the tile is and then the sink material starts. This sink is 9 inches deep. The total depth of the sink is therefore something like 9 1/2 inches from the bottom to the countertop, the depth of the sink plus the tile above it. When you look in the sink hole on an undermount sink, you see the full thickness of the precisely cut slab material used for the counter (usually polished granite ranging from 3/4 of an inch to 1 1/4 in.) and then the sink begins. The total depth of the sink, with full-thickness granite, is 10 1/4. It takes skill and specialized equipment to precisely cut out, ease, and polish the edges of a fine stone sink cutout on an undermount sink. It takes more specialized equipment and skill to make sure the sink is in absolutely the right position when you epoxy and then clamp it in. For that reason (and the additional depth of the sink gained by the installation), undermount sinks on granite are a luxury touch. If you try to use a tile-in as an undermount, the flange I mentioned isn't optimally shaped to provide a good bond or optimal visual profile to the counter material above. There will be a gap and it will look funny, in other words, not a smooth transition. There's also the additional problem of drilling faucet holes through the countertop. If you look at the undermount Cape Dory models, you'll see that the holes are bigger. This is to make sure you get a clean installation hole through the sink when you drill. If you do image searches on undermount sinks, topmount sinks, and tile-in sinks, you'll see what I'm talking about rather quickly. But again, if you're using granite slab material for your new countertop, a tile-in sink epoxied under it will look odd. Of course, that doesn't compare to the problems of dropping a tile-in sink OVER a ragged and unpolished cutout in a slab granite countertop, leaving the narrow flange of the sink completely visible. That will just look like a very bad DIY hack and will lower the value of your home.

can a disposal hook to this sink?

Asked by: Anonymous
Yes, I installed the Kitchen Aid Garbage Disposal 3/4 HP KCDS075ST and it is so quiet that when I installed and tested it I thought it was not working.

Why can't this sink be used on a laminate countertop on a 36" sink base cabinate?

Asked by: Lou
It can be. Whoever told you it can't be installed on a laminate countertop over a 36-inch base cabinet was either wrong or not recommending the installation for some other reason.

Can it be used as an undermount sink?

I would like to replace an existing undermount sink that has exposed faucet holes. Can I have this sink undermounted under granite counters?
Asked by: cccc
No, it is a "tile-in" meaning it is lowered from the top and tiled over around the edges.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Beautiful Sink... BUT as many have stated, it DOES NOT fit a standard cutout. (Our counter top installers learned that lesson the hard way... having to remake it) It is a solid, heavy quality cast iron sink. But we do have one complaint which is why I didn't give it an "Excellent" overall rating. There are casting imperfections which didn't allow the sink to sit flush on the counter top. It held one corner up by 1/4". Since I was without a kitchen sink for quite some time, I wasn't going to return it. Especially after fitting into the cutout. If we had known this prior, my husband could have ground it down with a grinder. But I wasn't strong enough to help him lift it out. He did the best he could with a metal file. But the bottom line is we shouldn't have had to do anything to the sink. Maybe tighter quality control to inspect the final casting? That being said, it truly is a beautiful sink and I do love it. The basin is large and deep. No trouble at all for washing large pots and is a breeze to clean. Although I do recommend purchasing the Kohler sink rack to keep the bottom from getting marred. It is worth the investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful sink I'm very happy with my new sink. It's solid and good quality. I also got the stainless steel grid for the bottom so I don't scratch it up with pots and pans. Lots of room to wash big pots. Can't say anything about the installation as I had the plumber do it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Make sure you buy a new countertop Didn't think we would have this problem like the rest of the reviewers, but we did. It didn't fit so we had to invest in a new countertop! Other then that, pretty happy with the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not good for retro-fit. I bought this sink to replace a double sink with a rectangle cut out. This one is the right dimensions at the widest parts but it is more oval at the corners and was too small for the cut out. The sink was exactly what I wanted, but it didn't fit and the information did not mention that it is oval shaped enough not to fit. I would buy it if I was doing a new house. I had to return it to Home Depot, and that was not a problem at all.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great sink great sink but do not assume this sink will fit your existing 22x33 inch opening, this sink has a need for more of an oval opening not the typical cut out for a 22x33 inch hole. if you have not cut your hole it wont matter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely perfect! I wanted a sink roomy enough to soak large roasting pans or sheet pans and this is a huge improvement over the two bowl sink it replaced. I also purchased the bottom rack and cutting board. The bottom rack protects the finish and allows large items to drain and dry off the countertop. Th cutting board nests in the sink and slides back & forth. The sink is deep enough to place a bowl under one side of the board for the chopped veggies (or whatever) while trash can be scraped directly into the disposal on the other side. The appearance and performance are exactly what I wanted. Because of the weight and depth, installation requires two strong people to lift and position it in the countertop.
