Carburetor Heater for 14RESL and 14RESAL Generators is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product really works to allow generator to start and run in below freezing conditions. My Kohler generator was not running properly during temperature conditions below 30 degrees F until I installed the carburetor heater. Now with the temperature getting down to below zero degrees F there is no problem with the generator starting and running when called for. This heater only draws 37 watts of power and only kicks in when the air temperature falls below 40 degrees F.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Appears to work as advertised, but instructions could be improved The Home Depot price is much better than anywhere else, but I had to work hard to get my order. The first two orders were cancelled without explanation several days after I received confirmation of the order. Eventually I got someone in customer service to push it through. Installation does require some mechanical ability and tools. The instructions are clear enough, but could have made it easier with a slightly different assembly sequence (attach the breathing tube to the engine block before inserting the other end into the heater, instead of after). Also, it requires a tube of RTV sealant, which isn't included, and you can't order online from HD (except by the case). At other online stores I could only find tubes of RTV Gasket Maker. I went to an automotive parts store and learned that is the same as RTV sealant. With everything else that's included in this kit it's hard to understand why Kohler couldn't have included that (even if they have to charge a few dollars more for it).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good price, easy to install This heater came earlier than advertised via UPS. It was the correct part for my generator, the directions were clear and easy to follow. Installation took about 30 minutes with simple tools. The heater has performed as advertised by keeping moisture out of the carburetor during variable weather conditions. The real benefit will take years to realize, but I am confident that this heater will serve me well in the New England environment.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good kit, read instructions carefully Our Kohler 12RES (natural gas) generator wouldn't start in the severe cold of last winter. Turned out that this kit is helpful for our northeastern climate but was not factory installed. If you follow the instructions and have basic mechanical experience, this should go OK. RTV (silicone rubber sealant) is needed but not included in this kit. I used some GE silicone rubber bathtub sealant (a type of RTV I had on hand) which worked OK. Home Depot carries it. First, disable engine. For work area access, remove lockable door, the battery area cover panel, and the starter side cover panel, in that order--otherwise, problems getting at screws. Then, here are some variations from packaged instructions that I used: 1. Ream out breather hole in air cleaner base plate with file just enough so plug will fit. 2. Attach modified breather hose to nipple on engine as first step of reassembly. 3. Make sure copper tube fits into heater--ends on mine were slightly different diameters 4. Slide insulation sleeve over modified breather tube assembly 5. Then apply RTV to both sides of heater and to heater end of copper tube and assemble. Getting breather tube, heater, and air cleaner base plate together on carb is tricky with wet RTV on parts. 6. If power outlet for heater is in battery compartment, run power cord thru firewall beside starter wiring. Temporarily sliding up plastic air scoop in battery compartment makes access to this hole easier. (Plastic ring bushing X-634-16 is supplied with kit but is only used on Model 14RES generator.) Our installed kit has not been in winter conditions yet. Back in the winter, we learned that heat makes a big difference in starting this generator. Warming up the engine compartment got it going then.
