Do both the cartridge and the mixing valve need to be replaced if leaking

I replaced the cartridge but not the mix valveand it stopped the leak for about a month but now has started leaking again
Asked by: Falente
Although other reviews on this website (including the manufacturer's itself) state that a leak should be fixed by replacing only the mixer cap, I had to replace both the mixer cap and the pressure balancing valve to get my shower head to stop dripping. Replacing the mixer cap did slow the leak, but it was still there. Prior to replacing the pressure balancing value, I even replaced the o-rings on the valve, which did not correct the leak. I believe the issue was that, even though these parts are OEM, my new mixer cap did not fit perfectly snug against the old pressure balancing valve. Long story short, you may have to replace both parts to get a leak to stop, contrary to popular belief. Both of these parts are easy to replace, and work well after replacement. As one reviewer noted, the only tricky part was getting the ring (with temperature markings) off, which is removed by spinning it. Prior to replacement, my shower lever was "jerky" and "noisy" when adjusting temperature. Now it is smooth and quiet. I did not have any issues with cold and hot water mixing before I replaced, but the action is more seamless now. Good luck! My only complaint would be the cost of these two items.

shower had no cold water. Sink in b-room works fine. Shower starts hot and stays hot. Is this valve my problem?

Asked by: mike
Yes, this valve is the likely culprit. This valve is supposed to "balance" the hot and cold water so you don't get scalded or frozen when the water pressure changes. However the rubber diaphragm inside of this unit is pretty much guaranteed to fail after 5 - 10 years, and the brass valve attached to the diaphragm can get stuck in the hot or cold position. Keep in mind that the mixer valve and washers can also fail, and when they do, you'll get a drip, drip, drip. I have two of these valves in my house and the mixer failed in one and the balancer failed in the other within around 7 years f when the valves were installed. You might want to think about replacing both while you're in there.

how can i find the model number on my old cartridge or rite temp valve

Asked by: godfather
I don't have the link, but if you go to the Kohler site you can figure it out from the various pics of the valves they have. I could not find a model number anywhere on the parts themselves.

But it's almost guaranteed to fail within 7 years. There are few things more annoying than parts that are designed to fail after a few years, and are a lot more expensive than they should be. If your shower only gives you hot or cold water, it's because this valve failed. Take a look at the photos. This is what a 7-year old disassembled balancer valve looks like. As you can see the rubber seal that used to be attached to the brass diaphragm has disintegrated. The valve got stuck in the "cold" position and stayed there. If your shower drips, but you still have *both* hot and cold water, then the drip is because a rubber washer or mixer valve failed, not this balancer valve. However disassembling everything is a bit of a nuisance, so you may as well replace the mixer valve, the washers, and this balancer all at the same time and then start the countdown to another failure in 7 years.

Valve was in stock at store but I had to order Pressure Balancer. Figured I might as well replace both as a set. Directions were pretty clear. Notice there is a notch on the back side that mates/aligns with the brass valve core.
