Answer:
The threshold is quite low which is a major plus for ingress/egress but probably not the best for using with a shower curtain. To use with a curtain you would have to have the curtain sitting on the floor to some degree which I don't think would be the best and it would be pretty easy for the curtain to slip out and leak -- So although you could probably use it that way I don't think it is advisable.

Thank you for your inquiry. This model does come with a shower curb and can be used with a shower curtain. Shower doors will keep out more water than what a shower curtain would, but you are able to use this model with a shower curtain.

Answer:
You would tile "down to" this base but would not tile the floor of the receptor (if that is your question).

Greetings Billo,
My name is Tom, also known as HD116 at Home Depot's How To Community. I am here today fielding a few product questions and saw yours. I spent many years working for a company that manufactured cultured marble shower bases, vanities, and shower enclosures and this particular base is not one of those designed to apply tile to after installation. The tile flanges that are referred to are for wall tile, and they are around the sides of the base. The floor on this model is slip resistant and is factory finished.
A base that is designed for that application can be seen by visiting the following link. - http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100659189/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053&superSkuId=202768344

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 6 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love it Easy to install and clean. Looks really nice with tile and seems solid enough to last as long as an old cast iron tub. Never going back to tile shower floors! February 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This receptor is better than a tile shower bottom per my tile setter! Excellent and ended up with only a 2.5 inch threshold which is really nice! Have only been using the new shower for about a month and absolutely love it. When our tile installer was doing the job he said the next time he puts a shower in his own home he is going to use one of these. Reason being, the bottom of a tile shower, especially the grout, takes a major beating over time and is a lot more work to maintain and keep clean (a lot of grout to keep clean, etc) and with the durability of one of these cast iron receptors he thinks it's superior. One thing to watch out for on the install; Because the back side of the tile must come out far enough to miss the radius of the lip of the receptor, be sure the walls are furred out far enough so your tile setter won't have to float the wall any thicker than necessary. Tile setter will know exactly what this means. Receptor is sitting on the subfloor and with a 5/8" underlayment this reduced the threshold down to about 2.5". Highly Recommend! March 27, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product, terrible delivery This is a fantastic product, highly recommended! My only complaint is the delivery service. The item weighs 200-plus pounds; the delivery service Home Depot uses sends just one man with the item, who is only supposed to dump the item on your driveway or sidewalk. For those of you who can lift and carry that kind of weight yourself, great! For the rest of us, some advance warning of the below-basic delivery level would be helpful. I would have paid extra or bought the product elsewhere had I known I would have to deal with an incredibly heavy item dumped on my front sidewalk. May 29, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Amazing Base - how sweet the sight I wish I purchased this 4 years ago - the price was much lower then. It's so perfect, though! I'm glad we had a plumber put it in - it's heavy! No regrets! June 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great product Highly recommend this cast iron product instead of tile floor. Very solid, durable, and easy to clean. Looks great too. I have one in my house and plan to buy another one for the other bathroom. March 22, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by The product looks fantastic The shower base board has a fancy looking. It is very sturdy. When standing on it you don't feel as cold as on tiles. March 20, 2012
