Customer Questions & Answers

How can I get the encapsulated bolts through the elongated gasket nipples on the gasket?

I'm unable to get the encapsulated bolts through the elongated nipples on the gasket far enough through to be able to put the washer and gasket on from underneath the toilet base on my older model Wellworth toilet. Both my husband and I have attempted this repeatedly both individually and jointly. Even with significant pressure, the gasket nipples won't compress enough to allow the washer and nut to be placed on the bolt—only two or three bolt threads show—and that's just going through the toilet tank without placing it on the base. Please advise how to proceed.
Asked by: Bonny
Just been through this installation myself, with a little help from Kohler. The new gasket is a different design from the original (the long nipples), but it worked out just fine. Some wisdom from my experience: * Don't use silicone, or any other lube. They will destroy the rubber over time. Use a little hand soap if necessary. * Make sure you use the friction disk under the large plastic nut. * push the bolts through while the tank is off. May need to turn them as you push, but they they do fit snug. * Make sure that the nipples are pushed right the way through into the tank before seating the tank. * Carefully sit the tank onto the toilet, wiggle it slightly to help place it. * Check all three areas of the gasket BETWEEN the tank and toilet, to make sure that the nipples are not showing. * Thread the washers and nuts onto the three bolts. You may need to press down on the bolts to get enough thread through. * Press the tank down firmly near each bolt as you hand tighten the nuts. * Check between the tank and toilet again to make sure the nipples aren't showing, and the gasket is flush to toilet and tank. * Press down on the top of each bolt, and hand tighten the nut, going from one bolt to the next to make sure you tighten evenly. * After going around the three bolts a number of times hand tightening, finish with a quarter turn of a wrench on each nut. Should be good to go!

Installation Question

The 3 rubber standouts, do they face up go to the tank, or face down go to the base?
Asked by: Quinn
They push through into the tank from underneath. As you tighten the bolts they will expand and seal the tank

This tank to bowl gasket did not work and caused me much extra work, Specifically, the center of the gasket has a recess for the large valve nut that does not allow you tighten the nut sufficiently by hand and has very little room for channel locks to grip the nut. With effort, I was able to tighten the nut with oil filter channel locks but the gasket leaked. Finally. I removed the center of the gasket and substituted a standard gasket. I was able to salvage the three tank to bowl bolts with bushings. What a hassle!

This Kohler gasket and bolts fit my Kohler toilet perfectly, as you would expect. The rubber is very high quality. In fact the one I was replacing was 15 years old and looked like it could have been reused successfully but I didn't want to take the chance. Unlike the more common gasket and bolt systems I've seen, this one is secured to the tank with a large nut that I did not have the proper tool to remove and retighten. I recommend having an extra large pair of channel locks on hand.

Needed this to supplement parts for a "universal" toilet rebuild kit that didn't quite live up to its name. Turns out the gasket provided doesn't actually fit all brands. My kit was slightly different than pictured, with bolts that had plastic coated heads which help seat in the gasket when you tighten them down. It takes a bit of playing around to get the gasket completely seated between the two parts of the toilet, but overall it fits and performs like the original OEM gasket.

I bought it to replace an old gasket that had to be ripped when I upgraded the flushing mechanism in my 17-year-old 1.6 gpf Kohler to a Fluidmaster dual flush mechanism. The gasket that came with the Fludmaster kit was a red foam donut that was supposed to be universal but it seemed impossible to wrap over the octagonal nut and kept leaking when flushed. I gave up on that and bought this triangular gasket kit instead. The bolts actually have a rubber top now, not just bare brass depicted here, which helps sealing better. The rubber tubes go through the three holes underneath the tank easily, and when the bolts are tightened, they get crumpled down and create a very water-tight seal, better than the rubber washers in the Fluidmaster kit. This kit also comes with a plastic washer and you screw on the big plastic nut over the rubber, which is also nice and easy to do. The bolts are a little smaller in diameter than Fluidmaster's but work fine.

The product is good, the problem is in the design of the tank and the toilet. As the gasket is new, the rubber works fine even if there is a design problem. The gasket is not supported in any way when installed so I added a piece of the old gasket to create additional support (see picture).

If you have a kohler toilet with flat headed tank bolts, check them. 4 out of 6 were broke on my toilets, heads shear off bolt and it is hard to see unless the head gets moved. New style has a different head and, hopefully, won't suffer the same fate.

Only product that works with Kohler 2 piece toilets - be careful NOT to buy the standard tank gaskets for Kohler toilets as they will leak (Trust me I tried 2 of them before I realized Kohler was brand specific.
