Customer Questions & Answers

how much does this tub weigh?

Asked by: 59152
The tub weighs 342-343 lbs in its packaging material (if you have to calculate shipping weight for a bunch of them) or for the weight of one of them loaded on a light hand truck/dolly. It weighs 314-315 lbs stripped of its packaging material. My advice is never to put this thing on a hand truck that isn't rated to at least 400 lbs. Two really good, sharp, strong, patient, and experienced guys used to working as a team can move this undamaged from the point of reception to a hand truck to a shipping vehicle to the point of installation. You need three guys otherwise, and you're dealing with a high damage risk if the guys don't baby the tub all the way home. The porcelain on the tub can crack easily during shipping. Don't buy this tub for a DIY bathroom renovation unless you're willing to look at the process of installing it as a major learning investment. Buy something lighter, steel, acrylic resin, or fiberglass for your first bathtub replacement. There are hundreds of small bathroom renovations outfits around the country that are reluctant to work with cast iron tubs like this largely because they're such a pain to transport and maneuver into position in a small bathroom that hasn't been stripped to the studs.

Metal shims or mortar bed to stabilize the tub?

I looked at the installation guide and it calls out for metal shims to level tub. Can or should I use a mortar bed to set the tub in - on top of the sub floor? Seems a mortar bed would provide greater stability than metal shims. This method along with a properly constructed support system underneath. Also, to achieve leveling, couldn't this be done by making sure the sub floor where tub will sit, is level?
Asked by: HandyinWadsworth
use metal shims, I used the galvanized steel "U" channeled 3ft long shims. I was lucky in that the tub lengthwise was level, but the sides were uneven. The tub weighs too much for mortar.

I am glad I went with this tub less chance of rust or chipping which almost all the reviews stated that was a problem with the other products. It is heavy but you only have to deal with it once and you're done. Also so many workman are having to work around it, the drywallers, plumber, tile work etc. I accidently hit it with my hammer while pulling out a bent nail on the framing around it and it didn't even leave a scratch.

Examined it at the store for damage and saw none. Home Depot staff were very helpful in loading this 350lbs beast into my Tahoe. Got it home and the plumber I hired for installation helped me remove it from the vehicle. We removed the wooden crate material protecting the edges and discovered a bad chip and cracking on one corner. I took it back immediately and exchanged for another tub with no damage (checked carefully the 2nd time). It took two plumbers and myself to carry the tub up one flight of stairs and work it around corners into place. It's solid, built like a tank, and has a superb finish. Despite the weight, I highly recommend this tub!

While I like the product in general I am disappointed as it has a mark on the enamel that looks like it is baked into the enamel. I have tried to remove it but it does not come off. While it is nit the end of the earth I know every time I go into our new bathroom I will see this mark. I need to contact someone to find out if the mark can be removed or if the bath can be replaced before i get it installed. I do not understand why this are not inspected better before shipment. These are heavy things to move and return for something like this, not to mention the inconvenience to all parties. I guess they just rely on you not noticing these flaws until it is already in your bathroom. On another note they do not even protect the sides or interior during transports not doubt will blame shipping but to me this si part of the enamel. Where is care and quality gone now days?

It is VERY heavy; took 4 grown contractors to lift it up the stairs & get it in place. But excellent quality and we are extremely pleased with it. Be sure to fully inspect the tub BEFORE taking it home from the store. Several of the tubs we looked at had minor chips in the porcelain & we had to go through 3 or 4 before we found one that had none. Would definitely recommend this tub!
