Product Overview

Kellogg Garden Organics Patio Plus Premium Outdoor Potting Mix is the perfect ready-to-use mix for all your outdoor container gardening projects. Specially designed with aged wood fines - it looks different than conventional peat-based potting mixes, but provides benefits much like the forest floor for growing annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs and more. Wood fines help the soil retain more moisture, reducing the need to water frequently. It also attracts beneficial soil microbes which aid in resistance to plant pest and disease, helping plants thrive in their outdoor containers. We added natural fertilizers like bat guano, poultry manure and kelp meal to give plants a good start. But don't forget to add an organic granular fertilizer for extended feeding throughout the growing season.

  • Blended with aged wood fines that help reduce watering
  • Helps plants resist pest and disease
  • With added fertilizers: bat guano, poultry manure and kelp meal
  • Bigger, brighter plants - guaranteed
  • Proven organic - OMRI listed

Customer Questions & Answers

Would it be beneficial to add vermiculite?

Asked by: jsr
While it would not hurt, I believe it would be a waste of money. There is enough perlite in the mix so that it drains well. I have started to substitute perlite and vermiculite with rice hulls in my soil mixes.

How do I determine how much to buy? Is this product more cost effective than the 25 qt miracle grow potting soil?
Asked by: KarenB
Kellogg Garden Organics Patio Plus Outdoor Potting Mix is a 1.5 cu ft bag which is equivalent to 38 Qts. Check the beam tag showing the price of the product in the outdoor garden area at your local Home Depot. The beam tag provides not only the price of the product but also the cost per cu ft. You can use that cost to compare with other like-products in different size bags to determine where you get the best value.

I am a small farmer's market grower, selling veggie starts, perennials, and herb plants. I have tried several different kinds of potting soil and this is the best I have found. I've been using it for about 5 years now. For 4" potted plants, I find that Patio Plus needs better drainage so I add additional perlite (other bagged potting soil brands are way too heavy and wet and need way too much vermiculite added to make them suitable). For pony packs that dry out quickly, I add some seedling starter mix that has vermiculite for moisture retention. Even though this soil has manure, kelp meal, and such already in it, I also add an organic granular fertilizer to the soil mix to keep my plants looking deep green and at their best (I use Happy Frog Jump Start, works great, wish Home Depot would carry Happy Frog products). Kellogg Patio Plus also works great for my potted flowers on the deck all summer long. And the price is great, especially compared to other organic potting soils. I'm glad I found this product.

Most of the seeds did not germinate, and those that did had stunted growth. I used some in a pot to grow mature plants, and they also did not do well. I recommend staying away from this soil.

This Kellogg Patio Plus potting mix is excellent for growing roses in pots. It is rougher than most and allows air to flow into the soil for the roots to breath which is very important for roses. I tried Premium moister retaining Miracle Grow potting soil and the Miracle grow organic potting soil and my roses died in both due to root rot because the soil did not allow enough air in and the water did not evaporate. The Miracle Grow potting soil worked fine for about one month then it started to retain too much moister and stunted the growth of my roses and then they eventually died due to root rot even though I did not water them very often. I even bought a moister meter to make sure the soil was moist enough and it showed that the soil was at maximum wetness and stayed that way causing root rot. But the Kellogg Patio Premium Outdoor potting mix was more air filled which allowed the water to dry out which the roses loved. I only had to water the roses once or twice a week according to my moister meter and they grew much faster and larger then the Miracle Grow potting soils. The roses in the Kellogg Patio Premium Outdoor potting mix survived the winter really well too in the pots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product and amazing value! I've purchased dozens of bags of Patio Plus over the past few years. The blend is always pretty consistent and I've had great success with flowers and vegetables. The price for a certified organic product is amazing and it has premium organic fertilizers in the mix like worm castings and kelp meal that the other brands don't have. The comparable potting mix at my local independent nursery is easily three times the price. Last year I stood a bag of this on end, poked a few holes in the bottom and planted a tomato plant right in the bag. That plant produced MORE than the plants in my raised beds! I had to add extra Kellogg granular fertilizer through the growing season, but it worked great.
