Customer Questions & Answers

Can this product also be used for a vegetable garden. We have extra left over. Thanks

Asked by: Dave
Hi Dave. I'd suggest mixing it in with some other soil/dirt from your garden, but yeah that would definitely work!

Is it spreadable with a push spreader

Asked by: steve
I doubt it. There's too much organic material and 1 to 1.5 inch long limbs. It would be very frustrating...

What if my dog eats it. Is it safe if ingested?

Asked by: Cynthia
Since Topper is an organic and all natural product, there is nothing in it that would be toxic to dogs. Of course, however, it is not pet food, so pets should not be allowed to eat it. If they ingest a small amount it may give them a stomach ache; if they ingest a large amount you should seek attention from a veterinarian, as it may cause a blockage in their system.

Says enriched with starter fertilizer. If seeding new lawn should I add additional fertilizer?

Asked by: Gardener
I believe you do not need fertilizer until 3 months (after germination). Make sure you rake your ground well before putting the topper ( minimum 1" thick), then seed, then lightly cover the seeds with another 1" of topper. You need to water the area minimum 3 times a days until the grass is about 2" tall; then you can water before 7 am and after sunset.

Top dress and then seed? Or vice versa?

Should I lay the seed and then top it with this or put this down first, then lay the seed? I would be rolling it either way. I've found articles suggesting both ways.
Asked by: Daniel
I would suggest roughing up your soil with a rake. Then laying the seed. Topping it with top soil. And then watering it to tamp it down.

Not really a "Lawn Topper" as defined as a topping for established lawns. More of a new lawn topping mix. Works well for new lawn planting. To top established lawns, the product needs a far higher ratio of sand. Seems such a product is very difficult to find in the States. So, make your own with items available at Home Depot. The ratio is as follows: 2 bags of "Top Soil"...any brand works fine 1 bag of "play sand" 4 shovels of peat moss. Mix in a wheelbarrow and spread with the back of a garden rake. To do it correctly, mow lawn down to just above shaving in late October. Rent a plugger and plug the lawn (aerate). Rake all the plugs and dispose. Spread the top mixture and pull it across the lawn with the back of a rake. Yes, it will take a lot of bags of soil and sand... about 35 bags of soil for a 3000 sqft lawn and 17 bags of play sand . Yes, it is a lot of work, but the results are amazing. FYI, in the UK, it's common for the mixture to be 70% sand, so adjust as necessary depending on your soil content and the number of mounds/depressions in you lawn. To truly experience a stunning, solid flat lawn, plan on doing this three years on the trot. The result is worth the effort.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the "Big Name Brands" I used this as an amendment for the native soil, which has a high alkaline base. Seeded lawn area, and within days, had grass popping up. Was able to grow a beautiful lawn in the 105 degree heat using this product. Also works great as a topper when you want to get a jump start on the spring growing season! Highly recommend for first time lawn artists

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Over the last few months I must have used about 30 bags of this soil to attempt to recover my dying lawn in Southern California. I have used it with grass seed as well as Sod. Grass seed germinates in about 7 days and grows very fast. Put this down, and cover with sod and the sod grows dark green and thick. Works great. Recently I have just been dumping this soil over some of areas of my lawn that are half alive (fescue), raking it out to thinly cover an area and watering. The grass immediately begins to take off and turns dark green within 7 days. Much more than the adjacent area that is also watered and does not have this soil on it. Sometimes (1 out of 10) the grass will turn yellow in 3 days making me think it is going to burn- but then it recovers and turns dark green and grows rapidly. Perhaps some bags have more fertilizer than others which causes this temporary yellow response? Just my guess. Anyway, I wish they had larger bags and that this was cheaper. Smells bad (meaning good to a farmer) for about 5 days after application.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This stuff is great for the price Used this topper soil to lay about a 1/2" of soil over new grass seed when it was 110 degrees out. It's great quality and feels like garden soil, very impressed. I got about 50 sq ft out of a bag.
