Customer Questions & Answers

Is it spreadable with a push spreader

Asked by: steve
The material size of Topper is not going to work very well in a push spreader. Pouring the contents out of the bag and using a rake to spread it to the depth you wish to achieve works best.

How many square feet does one bag cover for seeding a new lawn

Asked by: Rodboy
Depends how deep the layer needs to be. If you want 0.25" (=1/48 foot), then you can cover 2/(1/48)=2*48=96 square feet with one bag. If you want 3" (1/4 foot) deep as recommended by the Home Depot soil and mulch calculator, you can cover 2/(1/4)=2*4=8 square feet with one bag.

Says enriched with starter fertilizer. If seeding new lawn should I add additional fertilizer?

Asked by: Gardener
I believe you do not need fertilizer until 3 months (after germination). Make sure you rake your ground well before putting the topper ( minimum 1" thick), then seed, then lightly cover the seeds with another 1" of topper. You need to water the area minimum 3 times a days until the grass is about 2" tall; then you can water before 7 am and after sunset.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best I've found in years! No big huge organics. Nice fine compost material soil. In 12 bags I found 1 little piece of aluminum. Way way better then ANY big name brands I tried in last few years. Very pleased!

Seeded some bare spots and spread this on top, as well as, spread the remaining on existing lawn, watered and couple days later you can tell due to the green color in the area we spread it. Wish we bought more but definitely will spread in the fall all over the yard.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lawn topper full of new weeds. Recently purchased about 9 bags of Kellog Topper to renovate a planting bed for ornamental groundcover. One of the best/worst decisions I could have made. Started by solar sterilization of soil for 1 month, tilled, watered, sprayed glycophoshate, then fertilized and seeded. After two weeks new plants were emerging, "weed free". It was then I decided to top-dress the bed to reduce evaporation, as a mulch for seed bed. Since then I have been fighting two new weeds that exist nowhere else in my yard. One is spotted spurge, the other an invasive creeping wax-leafed weed. It has been two more weeks now since applying the mulch, and I have far more weeds than groundcover. Also experiencing an invasion of tiny hatchling garden crickets... only present in planting bed where I used Kellog Topper. Very disappointed, and frustrated with time and materials wasted. I will never buy this product again. Now need to spray everything with weed killer, remove the top dressing and start from scratch again. I am very disappointed in this product. Gave 2 stars on review, only because have used 2 years ago in another area, with no issues. Next time will try using "Rice-Hulls". They are far more weed free. Unfortunately my Home Depot does not sell this. Too bad Home Depot.
