Hi,

All kerosene heaters say NOT to use additives, however, the manufactures of the heaters sell these themselves (even though they say not to use them ). Very confusing .... are they safe? Why do they say not to use them (then sell them)?

Yes, this product is perfectly safe and greatly extends the life of the wick in your heater by reducing deposits on the top of the wick. I started using this product 30 years ago, and I still use alcohol to improve the performance of my four Toyotomi heaters. Kero-Klean is primarily methanol, so don't drink it or leave it in any tempting place with young children. But it works great. Start with their recommended amount--half an ounce--and increase if needed to keep your heater burning cleanly, to a maximum of two ounces. You may also use denatured alcohol (primarily ethanol with a percentage of methanol added to make it poisonous and non-drinkable) to accomplish the same purposes, but it is certainly well worth buying one of these to try and to use to refill with denatured alcohol later if you wish. Another great benefit of this product is that it helps if you ever get any water condensation in the heater or your kerosene container, just like in your gas tank in your car; it also helps if you ever get a less-than-great batch of kerosene so that you can still use it effectively in your heater. In this latter case, you might want to add between one and two ounces per 5 gallons to get it to burn better. Read Less

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Use the right amount I use this stuff every winter.. Works as stated. Only problem I ever had when I first started using it was how to measure the right amount.. Took a strip of paper and cut it to match the liquid height in the bottle and then folded the paper in half three times..to get eight equal sections..held the paper to the bottle and marked the sections... Primitive.. But works in a pinch..vanilla is the best in my opinion.. Lol . Hope this helps someone.. September 27, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by fuel oil treatment? will this work on regular fuel oil furnace pls comment October 16, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Tends to work, don't use too much All these kerosene fuel treatments generally contain methyl alcohol, plus additives like scent of cinnamon or other scents. In general, one oz will treat about 5-7 gallons of K-1 kerosene if you add it to your approved kerosene container, or add 1/4 oz or so to a 1.5 gallon kerosene heater. Do NOT add too much. Some swear by these additives, others say worthless...we have found that they generally assist, and properly used can reduce heater "smell" at turn-on and turn-off. The additives may be beneficial to the wick itself. December 13, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Waste of money Waste of money.Added this off and on over 6 months and does nothing as far as keeping wick clean. Smell is no different. Guessing the people who sell this also sell wicks and the red dye for K1 that gums up wicks. Another case of of the rich getting rich on fuel and fuel products while the poor get poorer. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great stuff This is some great stuff man. Makes the whole house smell real good. We had strong urine smells in living room. With the Kerosene heater running with this in it makes it hardly noticeable, not to mention covering the kerosene smell. Anyway, great product and the wife loves it. September 19, 2010
