Customer Questions & Answers

Do you receive voice alert as to type of alarm? How do you know if it is smoke or co2 alarming?

Asked by: Vic
As it states on the label on the back of the alarm: Smoke alarm is 3 long beeps, 1 second pause, repeating. CO2 alarm is 4 quick beeps, 1 second pause, repeating. In both cases, the led blinks in tandem with the sound beeps.

If one alarm sounds do they all?????

Asked by: Golfer
No, this is a "single station" alarm. Your other alarms should sound when the smoke/co2 moves into their range. IMHO this helps you identify the area in which the smoke or co2 is developing, but if it's in the basement, you're not going to hear the alarm up on the 3rd floor in a bedroom with a closed door. There are tradeoffs. If you have single station units, I'd have more of them (e.g., at bottom and top of staircases, in kitchens and furnace rooms, outside bedrooms). If you have linked alarms, you can get away with fewer. I'd rather have more alarms than fewer: my reasoning is that if a single alarm is defective (e.g., a linked, transmitting alarm that fails to transmit), another alarm is close enough that it soon will go off. But all this depends upon your personal preferences, and on the layout and construction of your home.

Does the product list anywhere the year it will expire, or do you need to make note of this itself and/or just wait for the day it chirps on you?
Asked by: Dodo
There is a label on the outer edge of each unit, on which you can put the date put into service, so that information is available without searching.

Bought these at the end of May of 2016 and just today one of them started malfunctioning. The CO alarm was sounding for over an hour and we had to disable it permanently. We tested the other two alarms and both are in working order. We took the one with the alarm going off outside and it never quit so we disabled it. Kidde claims that it is a worry free 10 year battery but after under 6 months we already have to replace one. I have emailed kidde to let them know about our problem.

It decided to go off and would not stop. There was no smoke, no steam, no cooking, NO reason for it to go off. It even went off in a plastic bag after I took it down. Thinking I just had a bad one, I went to Home Depot and got another. It didn't even go 24 hours without doing the exact same thing. There is nothing weird about my house and, once again, no smoke, no steam, no cooking, no reason for it to go off. It took it back and got a refund. I bought a Code One smoke alarm, with a 10 yr. battery and it has been working fine. I was a little worried when I saw they were made by Kidde, but so far so good. And the Code One alarm was about $10 less in cost.

I bought this product to replace a unit that started beeping because it was 'too old'. This was the closest model to what I was replacing, so I hoped that it would use the same type mounting bracket. Of course that didn't happen. The new bracket is about an inch and a half in diameter, so it won't mount on my popcorn covered ceiling. I had to make a spacer to move the bracket far enough from the ceiling for the alarm to attach. What could have been a couple of minute replacement became an hour ordeal. Since these units now are only good for ten years, and can't be repaired, it would be nice if the manufactures would at least keep the mounting system the same to simplify reinstallation. I don't know why they set me up with a 3-Pack since I only bought one alarm.

Mine is 3 years old and as winter approaches the house gets close to 60 degrees F at night. This caused the smoke detector to start chirping loudly. I've taken it down now. I believe this must be due to reduced battery power output at low temperatures. The label says that it's good to 40 F and we are nowhere near that. It was mounted on a downstairs ceiling with living space above so there is no exposure to outside drafts or cold space. Ironically, it does not eliminate chirps. I would prefer a replaceable battery and at least I can replace them twice a year and have very, very low risk of low-battery chirps. I have replaced it with the replaceable battery-type now. The extra battery cost is a small price to pay in order to sleep through the night.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Kidde Smoke Alarm - 10 Year Battery Installed easily - although detector could not use existing bracket so we did have to completely remove old detector's mount first. We were glad to see there was a 'warning' signal for replacing battery at it's end of life that you could turn off for a period of a week or so to give you time to buy replacement. Of course, we hope never to find out how good it is at actually detecting smoke.

Just make sure you do not use gorilla strength when using the drywall screw. We had no issue, but other reviews mentioned how they broke during the install. Pre drill as recommended and you should have no problems. Can't say how well they work, but that's a good thing.

I would recommend that the manufacturer replace the plastic screw with something more substantial that doesn't brake when it is used to install the unit. That was very frustrating.

The "easy mount" feature (attach small disc to wall, attach alarm to disk) is a pain in the you know what uness your walls are perfectly flat and perfectly plumb. Save yourself the headache and mount a screw onto the wall, leaving it to project 1/4-1/2 inch. Screw mounting disc onto the alarm, twist disc clockwise (to tighten and to activate the alarm and battery), press button on front to test alarm, press again to stop alarm. Hang alarm on screw. (The old-fashioned way). I really do like the idea that this battery won't need replacing for 10 years, reducing the need to get up on the ladder twice a year to replace 9-volts. Worth the extra price. Bought one for each floor of the house.
