Hello. In reference to your question, this ladder is about 8 lbs in the box. It is strongly recommended that you practice mounting the ladder for deployment as described in steps 1, 2, and 3 in the owner's manual. During practices, DO NOT PULL THE RELEASE STRAP TO DEPLOY THE LADDER. Your ladder has been carefully assembled to ensure proper deployment when needed. Do not deploy into flames. It's unstable. The rear arms can go through a bottom railing on a deck but because the crossbar at the top and between the sides of the ladder is flexible (so it ca fold up), the top of the ladder won't stay rigid. That causes the bottom arms that would go against the side of the deck to tilt from side to side. I showed Kidde a picture of my deck and they said it would work. Answer:
Hello Junebug. This alarm is designed to be put onto a windowsill and it is the window sill that holds the ladder up. You won't be able to climb down safely with it attached to a deck. It probably won't stay up. If we can answer further questions about this, you can call us at Kidde Product Support at 1-800-880-6788. Thank you for your interest.

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 28 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by emergency escape ladder Product clearly indicates that to be used only once so I should not even try it out once. Returned it and bought other brand where I could at least try out once to see how it worked. How can you trust a product just work as advertise in the most critical time without trying it out before hand? September 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Hopefully it will never get used... With no second story exit from the one end of our home, we decided to invest in this ladder to keep in the bedrooms. It grabs the window ledge and provides more than enough length to safely get from a bedroom window into the yard or driveway below. It also fits neatly under the edge of the bed and doesn't take up much space when its in storage. For $35, this definitely seems like a worthwhile investment. June 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Escape Ladder Good quality material have not used yet but when o do it will be good. April 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Single use only....but you need to practice Our bedroom is on second floor and I felt we needed to practice this thing so my granddaughters would know wht to do.....so of course we opened it to practice. It took us 30 minutes to figure it out and get it untangled and out the window......good thing we practiced. Then we saw the instructions that said ."Single use only" "You need to practice". The girls did not actually go out the window, but did climb from the bottom to see if we had it hooked onto the window sill correctly. It did hold...... It says KIDDIE, BUT ALSO SAYS IT WILL HOLD 500 LBS....Whats up with that? So now we return it to the store as defective and buy another one ......and label this one defective so they won't resell it....I really don't see why we couldn't use it again...It seems stable....but I will go get another one......Now that I think of it....this one had been returned to store after someone used it.... Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Hope to never use it We bought this for our bedroom that doesn't have roof access. Looks sturdy and easy to use. I hope we never have to use it. July 7, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Cheap piece of mind. Cheap piece of mind. Folks are complaining that you can't practice with this ladder ?? This ladder is designed to be your last ditch alternative to burning up on the second story - either jump out the window or scurry down the ladder. How many times have you run into a brick wall with your car to practice how the air bag works ? Or set your house on fire to see if your homeowner's insurance works ? Familiarize yourself and others in your household on how this unit works; even practice hooking it on the window sill, just don't deploy the ladder. Frankly, if you were to practice climbing down this or any other escape ladder, in all likelihood you would probably slip and fall; save that experience for when you absolutely have no other choice !
