Got this at Home Depot less than a year ago, supposed to last 10 years, and already needs to be replaced. Alarm kept going off, scaring my 3 year old son at 1-2 in the morning. So, first thing I do is change the battery, but with no luck as it doesn't connect properly anymore. Changing the battery is easy, so I'm not sure what happened there, and took it off the wall the one time, so I know it wasn't me that did anything wrong. I called customer service for Kiddie, and walked through a couple troubleshooting steps, only to confirm that it was no longer working properly. They took my information and said they would ship me a new one. Only problem there? They said 7-10 days! When I said that leaves no detector in my sons room for over a week, he went silent for about 5 seconds until I told him that I guess I would have to take one from somewhere else until it arrived, which leaves me uneasy. He then asked if there was anything else he could do for me in an uncomfortable tone.
So for a company like Kiddie, to not be able to send a replacement say, next day for something as important as this or even email me a replacement voucher so I could go out that day and get a new one myself, is a bit unsettling. If the replacement does the same thing, I will ask for my money back instead of waiting 7-10 days for another replacement. That's 2 strikes, and hopefully no more

This unit was installed one year ago, hardwired with two basic Kidde fire detectors. One night it started going off for no apparent reason. Our home was completely repainted before it was installed and we do not smoke. The alarm went off at 2AM with no apparent cause - no burning candles, no obvious dust in the air, the dog didn't even flatulate. I used the "hush" function and it went off again eight minutes later. We opened windows and turned on fans and a while later it went off again. Now I've changed the battery, blown the clean-looking unit out with canned air, and even opened the sealed unit to check all contacts and solder joints. Everything looks good, but as soon as I plug the battery in again, it goes off. I'm going in tomorrow to find a replacement from another manufacturer.

The Kidde combination smoke/co battery operated alarm with voice alerting you of what danger it has detected in your home so there isn't any questions when awaken from a deep sleep with the simultaneously ringing siren. The preferred location of installation is on the ceiling, but I didn't want to install on a textured surface so mine was put on the wall. The placement needs to be between 4-12 inches below the ceiing when installed on the wall. It's simple to understand the instructions for both operating and installing.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by MarilynB Love this talking Smoke/CO alarm!
This combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm with voice is a great idea - now I don't have to worry about counting beeps and what the beeps mean because I can clearly hear the explanation of the functions. It tells me if the alarm is for a fire or a carbon monoxide warning. That is awesome! I love the idea of a combination alarm instead of all the separate ones we have around the house. Although I prefer my hardwired alarm, this battery operated type is great for those areas where power is not available, providing peace of mind at any location.
It was very easy to install, and the backplate fit perfectly over my old installation. The instructions are clear and easy to understand. The beep chart is printed on back of the unit so you can check it easily. It will chirp and tell you when the battery is low also or when the unit needs to be replaced. I like that the expiration of the sensor is after 10 years of use.
The voice is a pleasant woman's voice that will state either "fire" or "warning, carbon monoxide" and the light flashes red or green depending on the type of alarm. It comes with the 9-volt battery installed the and mounting screws.

Replacing a so-called 10-year Kidde with sealed battery that quit after 5+ years. I wanted reasonably priced photoelectric smoke alarm combined with a CO detecter, talking alarm, and replaceable battery with easy access. This did the trick. Have programmed my iPhone to remind me in 2 years to replace the 9V battery rather than waiting for the typical 3 AM failure on some cold, godforsaken night. Hopefully now will get the promised 10 years. Climbing the ladder up to the vaulted ceiling is no fun.
